Frell is a ring of many small worldlets (planetoids AKA an "asteroid belt"), not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water, and nonindustrial in nature.

• These worldlets warrant hazardous environment precautions.
• Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
• The worldlets require extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
• It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Frell Subsector of Halcyon Sector.

System Data

Chaud-Frell System

The primary is Chaud, a gigantic red giant star. It has a luminosity of 1556 Sols, a mass of 6.96 Sols and a diameter of 225.4 million km – the corona extends to 0.75 AU, within orbital position (III). The inner system consists of (IV) a vacuum worldlet, (V) a vacuum inner world, (VI) an exotic atmosphere stormworld, (VII) a very thin atmosphere inner world, and (VIII) the Frell Main Belt, designated the mainworld – orbital positions (I) to (III) lie within the star. (IX) an exotic atmosphere bigworld orbits within the habitable zone. (X) a thin atmosphere hospitable world, (XI) a small gas giant, (XII) a ringed small ice giant, and (XIII) a sparse stony planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(VIII) Frell Main Belt

(VIII) the Frell Main Belt orbits within the inner system and is designated the mainworld. It lies at a mean distance of 11.3 AU from the star and is primarily made up of carbonaceous bodies with diameters of less than 300 km. The inner edge of the belt, with a higher concentration of nickel-iron bodies, is considered to lie at around 9.6 AU from the star and the outer edge of the belt is considered to lie at approximately 13 AU. The main inhabited body is named Frell Prime, with a mean orbital distance of 9.8 AU around Chaud and an orbital period of 11 years 229 days. It has a long axis of 760 km, a density of 3.15 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.034 G. It retains no atmosphere and has no hydrographics. Mean surface temperature: 170°C in sunlight, -100°C in shadow.

Native lifeforms

No world in the Frell system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

Dependent on the surviving colonial era deep space agricultural stations: Micaleau VII, Mindaneux 23, and Millochau 9, each with a vast 200km diameter space borne parabolic mirror. Hydroponics to feed the belter cultures.

On Gallilaei Station there are rumors of a deranged but brilliant government scientist, sequestered in a deep hermetically sealed vault for dangerous research. A failed academic on the run from the university. Dr. Ortega has developed and patented several military grade neurochemical enhancements.

Trembeaux is an orbital gas giant mining platform and fuel refinery. A rusted hulk patched and in need of overhaul or reclamation. Its systems are breaking down under the endless assault of the hypervelocity winds. A huge sprawling complex of gantries and cavernous platforms resting in the murky vapors of the ringed gas giant’s cyclopean atmosphere.

Calarbo Tungsten, a navigational coordinates relay for outbound jump traffic is rumored to contain a morbid array of freeze-dried ancient corpses, low berth crypts, a virtual vaults of brains. Authorities fear that system hackers use these sages to host pirated IDs and use identity theft to stage sabotage attempts against encrypted enemy data management systems.

Suspicious zealots, backed by a company of inquisitorial troops capable of great atrocities in the name of the faith. They host a lovely tourist museum not far from the starport boat yards. It is watched closely by a dangerous Peset class Asteroid Monitor, captained by a cybernetic local defense commander. Lieutenant Commander McCray gives trespassers but one terse early warning via tight burst microwave prior to thermonuclear ordinance launch.

Secure bunkers, filled with system refugees huddling in temporary shelters lashed together in a matrix of massive ancient craters. Linked by tunnel borne mag lev trains they host a bazaar of crafts and minor trade goods. This all serves as a cover for a thriving black-market weapons depot. Seems a cache of marine equipment went missing. Lurking missionaries, mutter about alien signals, and an ill-advised shipment of experimental samples that have gotten loose. Some were spotted near the supply base, for the interstellar aid society.

Research Base Rengo 6 hosts an Institute for Alien Study, several distinguished Temelik scholars serve on faculty. More quietly, rumors of anagathic research persist. Several gas giant moons feature a distributed array of poorly staffed military listening posts, each guarding its cache of vital supplies. They monitor as morale lapses amid itinerant mining robots, automated belter refineries, foundries, and smelters.

Some joke that these small remote spaceports sprinkled about the asteroid settlements are really just a poorly kept secret pirate refueling bases, with the usual cast of corrupt customs agents. They all invariably host a seedy spaceport bar that serves barely distilled ethanol that can double as industrial degreaser.

World starport

Frell has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
