The Celella Nebula, also called the Dark Nebula (from which the sector takes its name), is a unique nebula found straddling the Khtoiakta and Yohkui subsectors within the Dark Nebula Sector.

Description[edit]

While having a notably greater density of hydrogen than typical interstellar space, the Celella Nebula is not a typical nebula; it has neither the star forming areas of a luminous nebula nor the density of dust particles of an absorption nebula. On an optical level, it barely qualifies as a nebula at all; it cannot be observed from Terra (Solomani Rim 1827), a mere 50 parsecs away.

More unusually, the Nebula possesses the gravitational influence of much more mass than it is observed to hold. Most notably of all, it has a profound effect on local jumpspace, causing it to be a severe astrogational hazard.

History[edit]

The Vilani of the Ziru Sirka charted a great jump hazard spinward of the region they charted as Magaar (now Magyar Sector), and warned ships to stay well clear.

The appellation of "Dark Nebula" seems to originate with Terran explorers late in the Interstellar Wars era, the term being used not because of its visual nature (it is not optically dark in the least, and is barely visible at all) but in the same sense of 'unknown or unrecorded' as the term "Dark Age". Most Terran ships heeded the warnings of the Vilani and gave the Nebula a wide berth; the fate of those who attempted to enter it is unknown.

During their Age of Expansion, the Aslan learned to avoid the Nebula through bitter cost and lost ships. The navigational perils of this space became strategically significant during the early Aslan Border Wars.

In -433 a human researcher on Maadin (now Arakhal (Dark Nebula 2729)), Zekiye Holden formulated modifications to jump mathematics allowing astrogation through the Nebula, based on a close charting of its gravitational influence. With Holden's Formula, a Maadin ship made the first known transit of the Nebula in -421. This newfound ability gave human forces a much-needed military advantage in the Border Wars, but too late to prevent Maadin from falling to the Aslan in -404.

Even with the Formula, travel through the Nebula is still treacherous and the risk of misjump is real.
