Other Data
Non-canon: Bleak and dusty, most of the settlement consists of small collections of shanties where those exiled from elsewhere huddle together to eke out their cold, bitter lives. People end up here, most often not by choice. Penal colonists were among the first waves consigned here for cheap labor. The corporate directors maintain drab, humorless structures. Barracks and bunkers of thick stone and concrete with blast doors and coded entry at each vault like portal. Surveillance cameras sweep all port related and corporate controlled areas. Chain link fences topped with razor-wire predominate. Flood lights and guard posts dot the tall thick walls of the executive compounds. Simple survival is the only law here.
- A deposed lord, disgraced and stripped of his titles and lands supervises the security force patrols. They tend to be reserved and cautious but can be provoked to homicidal rage by careless subjects who are too slow with the bribes that keep them at bay. The desiccated bodies of those who displease the watch commander hang from leafless trees to dissuade others. He dreams of revenge against those he feels betrayed him. The corporate suits are disinterested in how he gets results. They simply will not tolerate anything which disrupts operations and has a negative impact on the bottom line.
- A pair of twin brothers brew a local vintage of excellent wine produced from fruit grown carefully in sheltered vineyards. These bottles can go for 100 credits each and much more off world. The locals offer travellers excellent deals and favorable pricing on drinks, especially if they can be persuaded to provide passage off world for a few undocumented workers who want out of their labor contracts. Small bands of free lance mercenaries frequent a few of the seedier ale houses near the port.
- Local conditions produce some hard determined fighters who look at an opportunity to travel, and get paid to kill people as a vast improvement over their local lot in life. Bounty hunters always seem to prefer the smoky dives around the prison blocks. As there is no judicial system or due process, prisoners are really just captives, people in the wrong place at the wrong time as far as someone powerful decided. More primitive codes of revenge and vendetta predominate among the lower classes. Murder just means you were not fast or smart enough to survive and not many raise an eyebrow of notice. Among the lower, non corporate class, your word is your bond and your honor. Insults are not taken lightly.
- Corporate interests run a depressing gambit of horrid operations. Smaller subsidiaries produce forms of entertainment illegal elsewhere. The cheapness of life here offers profitable options to the unscrupulous. Medical experiments, illegal drug trials and human testing, hazardous waste management and "disposal" are some of the horrors. The no questions asked approach has inspired some wounded veterans to seek out the clinics here as medical tourists. Powerful combat drugs, replacement parts and enhancements can be had for a reasonable fee. Encrypted secret long term data storage far from prying eyes, anonymous banking and money laundering services are attractive to certain off world investors. Companies can buy a form of local citizenship which enables them to have certain legal loop hole opportunities. Any salvage, wreckage or ships of uncertain pedigree can be repaired, dismantled, reprocessed, re-flagged and then added to the millions of tons of shipping as one of their impressive merchant marine ship's registry. Worry free safety inspections with flexible oversight can vary with the generosity of the donations to certain local charities. None of this is fooling anyone off world, and yet no one seems to be in a rush to shut these operations down.
