Cunnonic is an agricultural and garden world with an ideal environment for producing food from plants, animals, or other forms. It supports a shirt-sleeve atmosphere and a balance of available surface water. The system hosts a population between 100 thousand and 10 million sophonts. It is a member of Darrian Confederation in the Darrian Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector. Less than 10% of the world's population is the Major Race Aslan. 90% of the world's population is the Minor Human Race Daryen.

Astrography & Planetology

Cunnonic is a member of the Spinward Main.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Cunnonic's climate is cool but tolerable. Its many volcanoes are violently active on the average of at least once a year and cause earthquakes and tsunamis. By far the biggest obstacle to colonization was the presence of hostile native life. Large predators of several types ranged the one large continent, and poisonous trappers were common in the archipelagos. Much smaller herbivores ruined many crops before effective deterrents for them were found. All in all, a very Earth like planet for a people who had lived on a tame planet like Darrian to conquer. [2]

Visitors to Cunnonic are warned that the atmosphere is polluted with fine volcanic ash that, when combined with the regular rains, can fall from the sky as muddy rain, sometimes dangerously sticky, which can badly affect the flight dynamics of off-world aircraft and gravitic vehicles.

Native Lifeforms

Among the dangerous native lifeforms are the following:

  • Zenibh: Forest-dwelling octopus that drive predators away from kills with their vibrant colour changes.
  • Zhul: Tentacled worm masses that strike from beneath coastal sands. They have a paralytic venom and are known maneaters.

History & Background (Dossier)

One of the less hospitable worlds which Darrian settlers colonized -- perhaps because so many of the colonists were Solomani (who were used to such worlds). The planet's government split into eight factions. A higher tech level would be possible if these various factions would cooperate (especially on their starport), but that seems unlikely. Fortunately, these various groups rarely resort to outright warfare to settle their differences.[2]

Cunnonic was originally settled just prior to the Maghiz of -924 and, as a result, was abandoned in -907[3].

The second colonisation attempt occurred in -253 and was successful as it was undertaken in cooperation with many people of Solomani origin from the Sword Worlds. This colony was all but destroyed during the First Frontier War when the Sword Worlds detached the planet from the Darrian Confederation by the simple and wasteful expedient of destroying the planetary infrastructure and much of the population by bombardment from space. It was never formally annexed by the Sword Worlds but was used as a forward base by their navy for the succeeding centuries[4].

Cunnonic was recovered from the Sword Worlds in 1084 as part of the Fourth Frontier War[5].

This planet has an Aslan based garrison which is supported by the Darrian Confederation Militia from various worlds. These forces are deployed primarily against the native fauna and the deployments are notorious amongst the militia for post-traumatic nightmares.[6]

By 1105 the planet is reputed to have two Light Cruisers, four Destroyers and two Frigates in its local squadron - plus sixteen SDBs.[7]

Urbanization

Cunnonic architecture incorporates high pitched roofs with oversized gutters. Mosy are carved or decorated with demonic faces that spout water. The collected outflow, often too contaminated for drinking, is instead used to supply exotic water gardens with streams, pools and reservoir fed fountains.

Trivia

Approach to Cunnonic can be complicated by the remains of orbital complexes destroyed in the First Frontier War. This does have the side effect of spectacular meteorite displays as fragments of advanced alloys burn brightly as they drop into the atmosphere, often producing pretty coloured fireballs depending on the fragments' chemical composition. In 1105 the Darrian Confederation started offering salvage contracts for the removal of some of the larger objects in orbit.[4]
