Cleth is a nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
  • It is a member of the Protectorate of Leset in the Xelan Subsector of Far Home Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.

System Data

Amphitrite-Phaedra-Cleth System

The primary is Amphitrite, a dim red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.001 Sols, a mass of 0.215 Sols, and a diameter of 280,000 km. The companion is Phaedra, a red subdwarf star that orbits Amphitrite at a mean distance of 0.23 AU (orbital position (I), 34.4 million km) and has an orbital period of 13 days 17 hours. It has a luminosity of 0.0092 Sols, a mass of 0.144 Sols, and a diameter of 234,000 km. Orbital positions (II) and (III) are unavailable due to the presence of the companion star. (IV-I) Cleth, designated the mainworld, (IV-II) an exotic atmosphere radworld, (V) a ringed exotic atmosphere bigworld, (VI) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (VII) a ringed large gas giant, and (VIII) a trace atmosphere iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(IV-I) Cleth

(IV-I) Cleth is designated the mainworld. It orbits Amphitrite at a mean distance of 0.91 AU (136.1 million km), within the outer system. It has an orbital period of 1 year 164 days and a rotation period of 127 hours. The axial tilt is 43 degrees. Cleth has a diameter of 7,891 km, a density of 5.72 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.64 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Exotic, with a mean surface pressure of 0.89 bar and a composition of 94% nitrogen (N2), 2% methane (CH4), 2% argon (Ar), 1% carbon dioxide (CO2), and 1% carbon monoxide (CO), neon (Ne), xenon (Xe), ethane (C2H6), diacetylene (C4H2), acetylene (C2H2), propane (C3H8) and other trace gases. The world has no hydrosphere. Mean surface temperature: -168°C. The climate is rated as Frigid and experiences major seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is slow and moderate weather systems driven by the star work across the globe.

Satellite

Cleth retains a single natural satellite, a cratered trace atmosphere worldlet named Nereus:

(IV-Ia) Nereus (UWP Y210000-0, orbiting at 45 Diameters/355,000 km)

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 196 million km².

Native Lifeforms

Amphitrite-Phaedra-Cleth System

The large gas giant lying in orbital position (VII) (within the outer system) has jovionoid lifeforms within its atmosphere.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

Cleth is a member of the Protectorate of Leset.

World Starport

Cleth has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Technology Level

Cleth possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Advanced automobiles.
    • Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
    • Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
    • Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government

Cleth is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.
