History and Background
The current corporate state and society is built on the ruins of a bankrupt religious medical mission. Thanks to her high-tech medical services, wealthy visitors from a five-parsec radius visit the system for premium care.
Charity had never been colonized until fairly recently. Seeing the poverty of the Imperial Empty Quarter, religious charities from the Imperial Core founded Charity in 806 as a medical establishment, to give aid in the most dire cases. The medical mission was very successful, but public interest dwindled after the 880’s. In severe financial straits, the mission was sold to the Iper’mer in 955. The focus was shifted to specialized, profit-focused services for wealthy individuals, and Charity now dominates the profitable field within a five-parsec radius.
Charity LIC likes to focus on high profit activity whenever possible. “Fixing a broken nail of a princess for 50,000 credits? No problem…Distributing cheap, life-saving medicine to millions of ill children, pups, and hatchlings across the Six Subectors? Well, it depends on the PR return…”
There isn’t that many interesting thing to do on Charity, unless you’re a medical specialist7 or wealthy patient. They will find Charity far more expensive than any nearby system: the ship purser will complain about the endless fees, while those without a ship will be unhappy about the outrageous local prices. Marginal free traders would be wise to park their ship in (far) orbit, and avoid interacting with either the port or the world. For the desperate, there are poorly-paid day jobs available: steady local work requires Charity citizenship, an expensive and time-consuming process.
Charity Highport is not the place to go for a wild and raucous liberty, but travelers are treated as distant members of the family when there. Not conducive to nights of drunken debauchery, but a very pleasant change of pace. A tradition is for the receiver of goods shipped in to invite the shipper over to their home and share dinner with the family - which usually leads to another business deal, as long as you and the crew know how to mind their manners.
The actual population on Charity is about 100,000 in 993 Imperial, with tightly–regulated temporary labor (mainly Iper’Mar technicians, medical professionals and highly–trained support specialists from across the subsector.) Incidentally, aristocratic cultures like the Third Imperium tend towards formality: on Charity, only friends and old acquaintances are addressed by their familiar name.
