History & Background (Dossier)
Originating on Keshi (Core 1938), the militaristic empire of the Chanestin dynasty extended a feudal rule over some twenty-five star systems within a five-parsec radius. The Keshi conquests began when technology declined on Keshi's neighboring planets while Keshi retained jump drive. The Chanestins were careful to consolidate each new planetary takeover before moving on, so the core of their pocket empire proved a solid base for new expeditions.
In year -1304, King Brzeszcze decided that the time was right for Keshi to take advantage of its now superior technology and conquer its neighboring worlds. By -1250, the kingdom reached its largest size. Once established, rule by the Chanestins was not particularly harsh, except in the suppression of uprisings.
As the Long Night deepened, the Chanestin clung desperately to the handful of interstellar craft which still worked. With each century, another ship would be come irreparable, and by -200 there was only one functioning jump ship in the Kingdom, doing the rounds from planet to planet to ensure that the Kingdom's will was being done.
Sylean trader-emissaries, however, arriving in -107, received very short shrift when they spoke of the growing Federation, bound together by economic self-interest and mutual defense. The Chanestin were quick to recognize the threat represented by the Sylean Federation and its federal ideas. On the orders of Queen Nayarit herself, the twenty-strong trade mission was executed by firing squad for attempting to seed the Kingdom with treasonable ideas. The Queen had, by this time, rebuilt a great deal of their jump capable fleet in secret. The Royal Chanestin Fleet order of battle included several low displacement designs.
When elements of the Slyean fleet arrived at Keshi, demanding to know what had occured with their trade emissaries, they were engaged by the Chanestin system defense fleet. The Chanestin war lasted more than 100 years, alternating between hot and cold, low and high intensity warfare.
War lasted well into Cleon's reign and was a chief reason for the defensive architecture of the first Imperial palace.
The war ended in Year 2 with the conquering of Keshi and final surrender of the Chanestin Kingdom. The Chanestin kingdom worlds were incorporated into the new Third Imperium.
