Calistal is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Jerik Subsector of Halcyon Sector.

System Data
Hatchet-Calistal System
The primary is Hatchet, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 1.21 Sols, a mass of 1.04 Sols, and a diameter of 1.433 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a trace atmosphere worldlet, and (III) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world – orbital position (II) is empty. (IV) Calistal orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (V) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (VI) a ringed large gas giant, (VII-I) a ringed small gas giant, (VII-II) a small ice giant form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.
Saxe Subsystem
The companion is Saxe, a tiny white dwarf star lying some 9,450 AU from Hatchet. It has a luminosity of 0.00003 Sols, a mass of 1.11 Sols, and a diameter of 8,350 km. (I-I) a vacuum worldlet, and (I-II) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Neither of the worlds retain satellites.
Mainworld Data
(IV) Calistal
(IV) Calistal is designated the mainworld. It orbits Hatchet at a mean distance of 0.96 AU (143.6 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 355 days 18 hours and a rotation period of 26 hours. The axial tilt is 22 degrees. Calistal has a diameter of 12,962 km, a density of 5.59 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 1.03 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Dense, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 1.94 bar and a composition of 80% nitrogen (N2), 18% oxygen (O2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), xenon (Xe), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by allergenic spores and pollens of organic origin. Approximately 72% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.4m. Mean surface temperature: 28°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Warm and experiences moderate seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is active and strong weather systems driven by the star and the oceans sweep across the globe.
Satellite
Calistal retains a single natural satellite, a cratered vacuum worldlet named Vernan:
- (IVa) Vernan (UWP H200000-0, orbiting at 30 Diameters/390,000 km)
Mainworld Geography and Topography
Total surface area: 528 million km², Water surface area: 380 million km², Land surface area: 148 million km².
Native Lifeforms
Hatchet-Calistal System
Calistal, the mainworld, has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal. The pollens and spores released by the native flora give the atmosphere its taint.
No other world in the system is known to have native life.
Saxe Subsystem
No world in the subsystem is known to have native life.
History & Background (Dossier)

World starport
Calistal has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World technology level
Calistal possesses a Technology Level of TL–5.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone, radio, and television.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion, and the most fundamental atomic energy.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ground cars or automobiles and tracked vehicles.
- Water: Large ships and submersibles with steel hulls.
- Air: Early aircraft including seaplanes and very early unmanned rockets.
World government
Calistal has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
