A Bio-Identenoid or Typoid is a simple lifeform identification tool used by explorers and other such adventurous souls who do not possess extensive biological sciences expertise.

  • It is a non rigorously scientific identifier, but is still very useful and widely used.

Description (Specifications)

Most Imperial scouts from the IISS and explorers from an Explorer Service only have rudimentary training in exobiology, but they do most often get a brash course in Terran and Vilani biology, and are familiar with the more common lifeforms from those worlds.

And thus did an opportunity for non-scientific nomenclature appear. Most typoids are drawn from biological taxonomic nomenclature from the class, order, phylum, and kingdom levels. However, some such terms are generated from common language or even slang terms. The point of the intellectual device is to simply present a roughly equivalent lifeform in terms of a quickly identifiable and well known creature. There is no right or wrong, it's meant to be an expedient way of quickly identifying a previously unknown lifeform.

History & Background (Dossier)

The term has had many predecessors and is thought to have become an informal norm somewhat after the Interstellar Wars. It is a part of most Explorer Services and the IISS in the contemporary age and has even received official endorsement several times, including an endorsement in 1105 by the Siren Scientific Endeavor Society.
