Belmin is a poor, nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Jerik Subsector of Halcyon Sector.
Astrography and Planetology
This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.

System Data
Vell-Belmin System
The primary is Vell, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0334 Sols, a mass of 0.4574 Sols, and a diameter of 711,000 km. (I-I) an exotic atmosphere radworld, and (I-II) Belmin, designated the mainworld, have a shared orbit within the habitable zone. (II) an exotic atmosphere radworld, (III) a trace atmosphere iceworld, (IV) a ringed very large gas giant, (V-I) a small gas giant, and (V-II) a small ice giant form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.
- The star experiences periodic flare activity.
Mainworld Data
(I-II) Belmin
(I-II) Belmin is designated the mainworld. It orbits Vell at a mean distance of 0.28 AU (41.9 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 80 days 1 hour: it is tidally locked to Vell. The axial tilt is 3 degrees. Belmin has a diameter of 4,232 km, a density of 3.99 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.24 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Belmin cause frequent geological activity. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.32 bar and a composition of 86% nitrogen (N2), 12% abiotic oxygen (O2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor (H2O), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen and the relatively high levels of background radiation: emission rates exceed 15 rads per hour. Approximately 22% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water and sheets of water-ice. Mean surface temperature: -4°C. The atmosphere is slow and minor weather systems driven by the star and the seas drift across the globe. The climate is static.
Mainworld Geography and Topography
Total surface area: 56 million km², Land surface area: 44 million km², Water surface area: 12 million km².
- Oxygen contained deep within the world's interior is released by outgassing and serves to renew the atmosphere: it continuously reacts with surface materials and other atmospheric gases, gradually reducing the percentage of oxygen in the air.
- Belmin is a Twilight Zone World.
- The world experiences libration, which causes the star to move in the sky and periodically rise and fall above the horizon in the twilight region.
Native Lifeforms
Vell-Belmin System
The small gas giant lying in orbital position (V-I) (within the outer system) has jovionoid lifeforms within its atmosphere.
No other world in the system is known to have native life.
History & Background (Dossier)
No information yet available.
World starport
Belmin has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World technology level
Belmin possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
- Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
- Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
- Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World government
Belmin is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
