A Band Society is a group of sophonts that has formed a cooperative and collaborative social arrangement as well as tool use or other technological characteristics.

Description (Specifications)

The first non-herd groupings by society form and generally take on hunter or gatherer roles, and often a mix of the two for omnivores. These are nomadic groups, for the most part, and show real signs of cooperative behavior and society-building.

Key Identifier Characteristic/s

The key identifier for a band society is the presence of both external and internal technologies including tools and sophisticated social organization or hierarchy. This distinguishes them from creatures and other non-technological lifeforms.

History & Background (Dossier)

For most sophont species, a band society is a developmental stage at which a sophont social grouping begins to show significant advantages over non-technological creatures or lifeforms. Tool use and environmental modification begin to leave behind significant biofacts and ecofacts as the sophonts increasingly achieve mastery over their environment and achieve dominance over other species through the faculty of tools and technology.

While band societies are often considered a beginning societal level, some societies such as the K'kree maintain nomadic societal features while growing very technologically sophisticated. The formation of permanent dwellings is not always a precondition to technologically sophisticated societies.
