History and Background

In -1,250, the most powerful empires on Askaath at this time were centered on the western shores of the Sea of Filaments, and controlled about 20% of the planetary surface at the time. The populace born and bred far from the most distant outposts of these Westsea empires, near the southern pole of Askaath, and have yet to see a working firearm. For members of a TL 2 nomadic horse-riding culture, dependent on the livestock they herd from one pasture to another, the stars are only a source of fear and dread, as the home of killers with the heads of wolves. The Rule of Man, abode of the gods, was long ago devoured by the wolf-headed demons- the Turnik-speaking men of the Golden Grass must flee with their herds, if they hope to survive the fire-breathing steel dragons that the wolves live in. So goes the sacred tales: and many still believe in them, inscribed in stone pillars set before every worship circle and druidic college.

Askaath was a pleasant colony world whose population was growing nicely during the early Imperial era and the False Dawn. But when the Breakdown occurred, the inhabitants turned against each other, leading to devastating wars in the 340s-360s that killed most of the population and ruined the industrial base.

Askaath has become a major port of call, with a much higher population and technological level than was the case 200 years ago.

Askaath is seen almost as a retirement planet or playground for the rich. Laws are somewhat restrictive and no weapons are allowed out of the starport for pretty much any reason that Travellers can come up with. The guards are polite, friendly but firm (even if they seem a little over eager to please). There is no heavy industry allowed on the planet and the environment is fairly idyllic. The air is clean, there are a wide variety of landscapes and many resorts offer a wide variety of activities from extreme sports to rest and relaxation that could count as full medical care on many planets.

Major exports are Cusa Fruit, which is a very large berry from one of the native plants. Rich, dark Hunada Wood which is a luxury wood for furniture and carvings in this area of space and holo-disk recordings. Most recreational holo’s for the region are also made here.
