=== Uploading Images ===
+
Uploading images, to make them available within the wiki itself, requires that you be a registered user with a confirmed email address. If you are not sure if you have a confirmed email address go to [[Special:Preferences|your preferences]] page, and scroll to the bottom. There is a box for you to enter an email address, and a note if you have confirmed this address with the Traveller Wiki.
At this time, only registered users can upload images.

* Images are uploaded using a command on the left bar labeled "Upload file."

=== Recommended Image Sizes ===
+
It is important to size your image appropriately before attempting to upload it. The wiki has a 2MB limit on all uploads. The wiki accepts uploaded files in the png, gif, and jpeg file formats, as well PDF files. We recommend images that are going to be used in the infoboxes or the article lead be between 150 and 350 pixels wide. Other images used in articles shouldn't be larger than 600 pixels wide. While it is possible to have the wiki resize images internally, we prefer to start with images of the correct size.
* Infobox images: maximum of 250 pixels in width

* Top Right Symbols: no maximum, but recommend 150 to 250 pixels in width on average. LArgers images may be appropriate for some articles.

* Ship Images: recommended maximum of 500 to 600 pixels in width... Otherwise they tend to but against infoboxes.

* Quality: recommend low to medium quality. Aiming for 200 Kb or less in size. Higher quality images may be justified in some cases, but hosting isn't free.

=== Image Naming & Structure ===
+
Uploading files uses the [[Special:Upload|Upload file]] form. You can find a link to this form on the left hand menu under Tools. There are two pieces of information requested by the upload form: A file name and a description.
It is recommended that the name of the image, the artist, the source, and the date be included in the file name.

This is an imperfect example:

=== File names ===

File names should be clear and descriptive, without being excessively long. While the image name doesn't matter much to the reader (they can reach the description page by simply clicking on the image), it matters for editors. It is helpful to other contributors and for maintenance of the wiki if images have descriptive or at least readable file names. Avoid generic file names like "Cover.jpg" or generated names like "DSC00001.JPG".

For technical reasons, file names cannot contain any of the following characters, as these would conflict with wiki syntax:'''# < > [ ] | : { } / '''. For the same reason they also cannot contain sequences of tilde characters ('''<nowiki>~~~</nowiki>''')

=== Description ===

The description of the file is also very important as it allows others to find and understand what the image is, where it comes from, where it can and should be used, and who else can use it.

Please include the following information about the image in the description:

== History & Background ([[Dossier]]) ==

The [[Traveller RPG Wiki]] is still building an image library that covers but a small percent of what is available from Traveller's nearly 2,000 publications.

* The #1 rule is to make sure that the image owner and/or creator has given consent to the image being uploaded here. Please directly ask the image owner / creator and keep a written or electronic record of the permission being given. You may be asked to provide that proof of permission. Be on the right side of [[copyright]].

* The wiki has permission from [[FFE]] and several other publishers to use their images in a non-profit way subject to the images being taken down upon request.

* Still, you should ask before you upload an image. A wiki moderator may be able to help you with this.

* Many artists have been generous to share their images with the wiki and it's customary to include a hyperlink back to the artist's site and to refer potential business to an artist if they are ok with that. Just ask.

This is an article about how to upload and use images in an article here at the Traveller RPG Wiki. The article covers both policy about uploading images as well as steps for using images in articles.

The wiki welcomes fan art and will accept most image donations. Images must be family friendly and avoid overtly sexual themes. Just contact one of the stewards if you have any questions.

Uploading images[edit]

Before you upload any image please make sure that the image owner or creator has given consent to the image being uploaded here. Please directly ask the image owner or creator and keep a written or electronic record of the permission being given. You may be asked to provide that proof of permission. Be on the right side of copyright. The wiki has permission from FFE and several other publishers to use their images in a non-profit way subject to the images being taken down upon request.

Uploading images, to make them available within the wiki itself, requires that you be a registered user with a confirmed email address. If you are not sure if you have a confirmed email address go to your preferences page, and scroll to the bottom. There is a box for you to enter an email address, and a note if you have confirmed this address with the Traveller Wiki.

Uploading files uses the Upload file form. You can find a link to this form on the left hand menu under Tools. There are two pieces of information requested by the upload form: A file name and a description.

File names[edit]

File names should be clear and descriptive, without being excessively long. While the image name doesn't matter much to the reader (they can reach the description page by simply clicking on the image), it matters for editors. It is helpful to other contributors and for maintenance of the wiki if images have descriptive or at least readable file names. Avoid generic file names like "Cover.jpg" or generated names like "DSC00001.JPG".

For technical reasons, file names cannot contain any of the following characters, as these would conflict with wiki syntax:# < > [ ] | : { } / . For the same reason they also cannot contain sequences of tilde characters (~~~)

Description[edit]

The description of the file is also very important as it allows others to find and understand what the image is, where it comes from, where it can and should be used, and who else can use it.

Please include the following information about the image in the description:

Description
Provide a brief description of the image, a few words to a sentence or two about the contents and source of the image.
Artist
If known, please provide the name of the artist so proper credit can be given. Link to the artist page if it is available.
Source
If the image was originally published in a book or magazine, use a {{Ludography cite|...}} to describe the source of the image. For images supplied by a fan or other site include a link to the site of the image.
Copyright tag
Please use one of the following templates to categorize and describe the source of the image and the associated copyright.

Using images in an article[edit]

Wikipedia contains a tutorial with detailed information about how to use images in a wiki and a manual.

There are many ways to size or locate an image on an article page. The below code are among the simplest and most effective ways of doing this.

[[File: TBD.jpg|center]] image centered
[[File: TBD.jpg|right]] image right

There are many ways to add a caption to an image. The below code are among the simplest and most effective ways of doing this.

These can be combined.
