Anti-Shipping Missile

Anti-Shipping Missiles are guided projectiles designed to detonate near a target in order to inflict damage on it.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

A self-propelled guided weapon typically launched from a missile rack.

The weapon produces noise and vibration, it generates a visible flash when it is launched, and is hot. It is size 4 (around half the size of a typical human). It can be used within a vacuum environment.

The missile will typically self-destruct if it fails to hit its target.

Anti-Shipping Missile[edit]

A commercial shipboard missile manufactured at TL-8.

  • It is rated as a 5G5 limited burn, radio sensing, proximity detonator, high explosive warhead missile.
  • It is identified as Missile - 4 - HE - Guided.
Basic Missile Characteristics
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage The Anti-Shipping Missile has an overall length of 0.98 meters, a maximum diameter of 0.145 meters, and a contained internal volume of approximately 0.015 Kiloliters (equivalent to slightly more than 0.001 starship Tons). It is built in a needle configuration and is constructed from lightweight alloys and composite materials. It is fully streamlined and has small airfoil surfaces which extend following launch, improving its atmospheric performance – missiles are primarily used in vacuum environments, however, and atmospheric performance is rarely a consideration.
  • It has a total mass of 50 kg.
  • It is rugged and durable and is able to withstand stresses in excess of 5G.
2. Performance The missile is fitted with a limited burn Solid Fuel Rocket propulsion system and can achieve a maximum of 5G acceleration. The exhaust outlets can be angled, allowing the missile's vector to be adjusted during spaceflight: the vector can only be changed during a burn.
  • The missiles acceleration can be increased but it cannot be reduced.
3. Electronics The missile does not have an independent guidance system: it is controlled directly by the Gunner.
4. Armament The normal payload for the missile is a 10 kg high explosive shaped charge warhead.
  • The missile is fitted with a proximity detonator.
5. Defenses The missile is unarmored and is not fitted with defensive systems.
6. Fuel System The missile carries 28 kg of solid propellant. The fuel is segregated into 5 increments (burns), permitting the motors to be turned off and restarted if desired.
  • For simplicity, each burn is considered to last for approximately 3.3 minutes (200 seconds) and to use approximately 5.6 kg of fuel.
  • Each burn increases the missiles acceleration by 1G.
7. Cost The basic cost of the missile depends on the Tech Level at which it was manufactured.
  • At TL-7 the missile costs Cr31,100.
  • At TL-8 (the design TL), the missile costs Cr16,200.
  • At TL-9 or higher the missile costs Cr15,960.

The missile is a standard design constructed from generic components. Detailed schematics and architectural plans are widely available and no design fee is chargeable.

8. Comments The missile is contained within a storage tube that has a length of 1 meter, a diameter of 0.15 meters, and a mass of 5 kg. The container includes integral test circuitry and the missile launch mechanism, consisting of containers of compressed gas that push the missile clear of the tube just before the rocket motor ignites.
  • The tube is loaded directly into a missile rack.
  • The tube is disposed of when the missile is expended. Spent tubes can be refurbished and reused and have a small resale value.

Different manufacturers give their missiles distinctive surface finishes, though flat dark gray is typical.

  • Individual components of the missile carry serial numbers and markings. Many models have corporate logos.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Shipboard missiles have been in use since the earliest days of Vilani interstellar travel and remain as a standard weapon system. A huge range of designs are available from weapons dealers across Charted Space. Low population and Non-industrial worlds, for various reasons, cannot locally manufacture missile components: they must be imported, inflating their prices.

Anti-Shipping Missiles are mass produced from standardized components and assembled in starport armories ready for sale. Custom designs of missile can be specified if desired. Some components (specifically warheads) may not be available due to local law level restrictions.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities[edit]

Different designs are known by many different names but all have very similar performance characteristics and capabilities. All variants are designed to fit within a standard launch tube, enabling them to be used with standard missile racks.
