Starships are designed with the Classic Traveller format, using High Guard.

The Alfred class Gunboat is a fairly capable vessel built on the whim of a noble.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Alfred class Gunboat was originally designed for service with the 146th Fleet but is used widely across the Domain of Sylea. It is built around a fixed forward-firing Particle Accelerator and a huge power plant, it carries a single crewmember, and it is fiited with an extremely sophisticated computer and advanced onboard electronics. Alfreds are relatively fast and agile but are outpaced and outmaneuvered by dedicated Fighters. Though the bridge is spacious and well appointed there are no crew accommodations and the vessel has relatively limited onboard life support, restricting the class to shorter duration missions.

The vessel is unconventional – it was personally designed by the eccentric 14th Duke of Oreo, a self-taught expert in naval architecture – but successfully passed its naval trials and was accepted for service. The hulls used for the Gunboats are "Oreo Pattern" units: unarmored and constructed in a Close Structure layout at lower tech shipyards.

Basic Ship Characteristics[edit]

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (...of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (...thousands of tons) where necessary. [1]

Basic Ship Characteristics [2]
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage / Hull The Alfred class is constructed using a 90 Ton "Oreo Pattern" hull built in a Close Structure configuration. The hull is partially streamlined, giving a relatively limited atmospheric performance that is reliant on its onboard gravitic systems.
  • The vessel is fitted with an airlock.
  • The vessel has sturdy retractable legs, allowing surface landings.
2. Crew x1 crew.
  • x1 command/pilot.

Accommodations

  • No accommodations are provided and the vessels are restricted to short duration missions.

Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have basic life support and environmental systems.

  • There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel.
  • There is an emergency locker.
3. Performance The vessel mounts a Maneuver-5 drive and a Power Plant-24, giving performance of 5-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 5. The internal fuel tankage gives the power plant 4 weeks duration.
  • The engineering section is controlled from the bridge. Access to the machinery section can be gained via a sealable hatch.
4. Electronics Adjacent to the small craft bridge is a Model/9 computer: no backup computer is installed.
  • There are multiple workstations and control points throughout the vessel.
  • The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, an advanced sensor array, and has an avionics suite.
  • It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command.
  • It is equipped with a sophisticated ECM package.
5. Hardpoints 1 hardpoint.
6. Armament The normal weapons fit-out for it is:
7. Defenses The hull is unarmored.
  • The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.
8. Craft The vessel carries no subcraft.
9. Fuel Treatment The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 21.6 Tons.
  • The hull is fitted with fuel scoops.
  • The vessel is not equipped with fuel purification equipment.
10. Cost The basic cost of the vessel is MCr219.95
  • Architects Fee: MCr2.2
11. Construction Time 36 weeks (8 months) as standard.
  • Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12. Comments Standard cargo capacity amounts to 0.2 Tons.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The Alfred class Gunboat sees service in Fleets across the Domain of Sylea and beyond. It was the personal design project of the eccentric but influential 14th Duke of Oreo. It was intended for exclusive use with the 146th Fleet, which is permanently stationed in Oreo Subsector, but has seen extensive service within the Domain.

The 14th Duke was a direct descendant of the aristocratic Halls families, the pre-Imperial rulers of Oreo Subsector. When the Oreo Worlds, the proto-polity they controlled, was absorbed into the expanding Third Imperium they gained a privilege known as the "Oreo Settlement". This mandated that any vessels that were to serve with the 146th Fleet – the designation given to the former Oreo Worlds flotilla and considered by the 14th Duke to be his "personal Fleet" – must be locally designed and manufactured. The privilege had been granted by Cleon I himself and the Duke insisted that it must be honored.

The demand was utterly impractical and strategically suicidal, and the Navy resisted the proposal, eventually resulting in the direct intervention of the Archduke of the Domain. She ruled that all vessels that were to see service with 146th Fleet were to carry an Alfred class Gunboat, an outcome that was acceptable to both the Duke and the Navy. The current Duke has maintained his father's policy and as a result many classes of warship operating within the Domain of Sylea carry at least one Alfred. Some naval officers resent the ongoing Noble influence on naval architecture: others see the broader political benefits that such indulgences can bring.

Oreo Pattern Hulls[edit]

"Oreo Pattern" hulls are a naval design feature that grew out of the "Oreo Settlement", and which was initially implemented in Oreo Subsector of Massilia Sector for economic reasons following the Civil War. Fundamentally, it is the process of creating hybrid technology ships. Unarmored hulls are locally built at lower tech levels, transported aboard commercial vessels, and fitted out as TL-15 warships at the more advanced shipyards in the region. "Oreo Pattern" starships have proven just as capable as their counterparts originating in other regions of the Imperium and it is now an accepted quirk of warships originating within the Domain of Sylea.
