Alepus is a poor, high-population, non-agricultural, industrial world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.

  • As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
  • It is unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
  • It is a part of the Client States in the Nisor Subsector of Far Home Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.

System Data

Iron-Alepus System

The primary is Iron, a dim red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.007 Sols, a mass of 0.331 Sols, and a diameter of 498,000 km. (I-I) a trace atmosphere worldlet, (I-II) Alepus, designated the mainworld, (II) a trace atmosphere iceworld, (III-I) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (III-II) a small gas giant, (IV) a dense stony planetoid belt, (V) a large gas giant, (VI) a ringed large gas giant, (VII-I) a small ice giant, and (VII-II) a dense icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(I-II) Alepus

(I-II) Alepus is designated the mainworld. It orbits Iron at a mean distance of 0.29 AU (43.4 million km), within the outer system. It has an orbital period of 99 days 4 hours: it is tidally locked to Iron. The axial tilt is 3 degrees. Alepus has a diameter of 4,651 km, a density of 7.02 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.47 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Iron cause frequent geological activity. Its atmosphere is rated as Very Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.19 bar and a composition of 83% nitrogen (N2), 15% abiotic oxygen (O2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen. Approximately 28% of the surface is covered in sheets of water-ice. Mean surface temperature: -65°C. The atmosphere is slow and weak weather systems driven by the star drift across the globe. The climate is static.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 68 million km², Land surface area: 49 million km², Ice surface area: 19 million km².

  • The oxygen in the atmosphere is abiotic in origin, produced by the photocatalytic reaction between UV energy radiating from the star and titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is found in surface minerals such as ilmenite.
  • Alepus is a Twilight Zone World.
  • The world experiences libration, which causes the star to move in the sky and periodically rise and fall above the horizon in the twilight region.

Native Lifeforms

Iron-Alepus System

No world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

Alepus is a member of the ANMaN Worlds.

World starport

Alepus has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Alepus possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government

Alepus has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

The various world governments of Alepus, while remaining nominally independent, have all seen pro-Mantlerist regimes take power and officially recognise the preeminence of the Protectorate of Leset.

Some of these nation-states are much more proactively Mantlerist than others. The Protectorate provides financial assistance, infrastructure improvements, and trade benefits to loyal regimes, and assigns "advisers" and "specialists" to "assist the development" of those it deems less committed to the cause.

Various counter-Mantlerist groups are actively engaged in an armed struggle against the Mantlerist regimes and their Protectorate overlords, and are funded and equipped through the Worlds of The Leader.
