The Abrstia are small, hexapodal animals, bearing a superficial resemblance to the Solomani-Terran chicken, originating from Zhdant (Zhodane 2719). They are commonly kept as livestock through Zhodani space and are also exported elsewhere.
The Abrstia is also recorded as Arrstia in some library entries.
Physiology and ecology
The Abrstia evolved on Zhdant as omnivore/hunters. The primitive Zhodani took notice of the Abrstia and began to domesticate them around -40,000, which culminated in a fully domesticated breed by around -30,000.
Two of the major differences between Solomani-Terran chickens and this animal are that the Abrstia possess six limbs (four wings, and two legs), and that the Abrstia does not have feathers, but instead is covered in a fibrous feather analog closer to the wool on Terran sheep than the feathers on a Terran avian.
Diet and trophics
Abrstia eat a variety of small animals, insects, and plants.
History and background
The Abrstia evolved naturally on Zhdant, in an omnivore/hunter niche. The primitive Zhodani left on the world after the Ancients' Final War took notice of the Abrstia and began to domesticate them around -40,000. The process culminated in a fully domesticable breed by around -30,000.
Abrstia are not only raised for their meat and eggs, but also for their wondrous fibrous feathers, which can be woven into a fine cloth. Abrstia-cloth is valued throughout the known galaxy by merchants and traders.
The Zhodani insist that the Abrstia is superior to the Terran chicken since it produces twice as many wings per animal. Some Solomani and Vilani gourmands have begun to agree with their Zhodani counterparts.
Travellers' Aid Society Advisory
The Travellers' Aid Society classifies the Abrstia as non-threatening to most sophonts and makes no special advisory regarding this creature.
