The star 40 Eridani (otherwise known as Omicron2 Eridani) is a trinary star system with a yellow-orange type K1 V primary component, 40 Eridani A (known as Keid), that is orbited by a second binary pair 40 Eridani B/C.

Description (Specifications)

The B/C binary component is composed of a white B-component degenerate dwarf star of spectral type DA4, and a pinkish-orange C-component "Red Dwarf" main sequence star (DY Eridani) of spectral type M4.5 Ve. The B/C binary component orbits Keid at an average distance of approximately 400AU with a period of about 7200 years, and the B and C components orbit one another with an average separation of ~35AU (going from 21AU at periastron to 49AU at apastron) over a period of 252 years.

  • The habitable zone of Keid is located at ~0.68AU. At this distance Keid would appear as a brilliant yellowish-white sun nearly 20% wider than Sol does from the surface of Terra. An observer on a planet in the habitable zone of the Keid system would see the B/C pair as unusually bright (magnitudes -8 and -6) white and pinkish-orange stars in the night sky. Though not enough to diminish the darkness at night, they would be visible in daylight (assuming an Earth-normal atmosphere).
  • 40 Eridani C (DY Eridani) is a Flare Star.
  • Because of its low mass, the interior of 40 Eridani C is completely convective, causing energy to be transferred to the exterior by the movement of plasma rather than through radiative transport. This convection means that the helium ash left over from the thermonuclear fusion of hydrogen does not accumulate at the core, but instead circulates throughout the star. Unlike Sol, which will only burn through about 10% of its total hydrogen supply before leaving the main sequence, 40 Eridani C will consume nearly all of its fuel before the fusion of hydrogen comes to an end, becoming smaller and hotter as the fuel is used up and turning into a "blue dwarf" as its end approaches. It will finally end its life as a white dwarf, without having passed through the red-giant phase.
  • The 40 Eridani star system is approximately 5.0pc from Terra, and is located in a generally Rimward/Rimspinward direction from Terra at bearing 200.75o Galactic Longitude and -38.0o South Galactic Latitude.
