The nine characters drawn from science fiction were identified in Issue 1 of the Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society as:
- John Carter of Mars, from the John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs;
- Kimball Kinnison, from the Lensman Series by E. E. "Doc" Smith;
- Jason dinAlt, from the Deathworld Trilogy by Harry Harrison;
- Earl Dumarest, from the Dumarest Saga by E. C. Tubb;
- Beowulf Shaeffer, from some of the Known Space series by Larry Niven;
- Anthony Villiers, from Starwell and The Thurb Revolution by Alexei Panshin
- Dominic Flandry, from the Flandry Series by Poul Anderson
- Kirth Gersen, from The Killing Machine by Jack Vance;
- Gully Foyle, from The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester.
