'''''System Book 1: Katringa''''' is the first in a series of books from ''Spica Publishing'' that describes a complete planetary system and its society, and is designed for use with ''Traveller'' from ''Mongoose Publishing'' or any science-fiction RPG.
Katringa is small, cold world with an exotic atmosphere located off the main trade routes. It is a former corporate mining colony run by the Horizons Unlimited corporation that is gradually being allowed more independence, although corruption still pervades the government. Conditions are harsh in the asteroid belt close to the system’s energetic primary star, but the riches are worth the risk.

By Christmas, we should have the ''[[The_Traveller_Adventure|Traveller Adventure]]'' ready, and volumes coming in the 12-24 months include ''The Traveller Alien'', ''The Traveller Encyclopedia'', ''The Traveller Fleet'', and ''The Traveller Soldier''.
:'''Contributor's Note:'''
:''The Traveller Adventure'' was published in 1983. The other volumes mentioned above were '''not''' published, at least not in the original format. From p. 48, Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society (No. 13):

By Christmas, we should have the ''[[The_Traveller_Adventure|Traveller Adventure]]'' ready, and volumes coming in the 12-24 months include ''The Traveller Alien'', ''The Traveller Encyclopedia'', ''The Traveller Fleet'', and ''The Traveller Soldier''.
:'''Contributor's Note:'''
:''The Traveller Adventure'' was published in 1983. The other volumes mentioned above were '''not''' published, at least not in the original format. Aliens were instead covered in a series of "Alien Races" books; the Encyclopedia was split into two Supplements, [[Library Data (A-M)]] and [[Library_Data_(N-Z)|Library Data (N-Z)]]; and the Fleet became [[Fighting Ships|Supplement 9: Fighting Ships]].

Spica sector was the subject of a complete refurbishment by [http://www.spicapublishing.co.uk/ Spica Publishing Ltd]. This project originally had the approval of [http://www.farfuture.net/ Marc Miller], and a Spica Sector EPIC Sourcebook was to have been published in due course. However, the advent of [http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/rpg/series.php?qsSeries=51 Mongoose Traveller] changed everything, and all bets on the OTU were off. Luckily, one man and his fanzine, Flynn of [http://stellarreaches.nwgamers.org/ Stellar Reaches], talked to Mongoose and ensured that "free stuff", even if it was set in the OTU, was ok by them.
An intelligent race originating on [[Muan Gwi (world)|Muan Gwi]] (Vega 0107-A456A86-F) and inhabiting the [[Vegan Autonomous District]]. They are named by humans after the bright star near their homeworld.

=Physical Characteristics=
Vegans are upright, bipedal, and bilaterally symmetrical, averaging 2.2 meters in height. They are bisexual, homeothermic oxygen breathers with an average lifespan of over 200 years. Because of their low-gravity origin, they are physically quite weak, and are unable to live on high gravity worlds. The head serves both as braincase and as sensory appendage. Auditory organs are located in the collar-like structure around the neck. Despite external appearances to the contrary, Vegans have two eyes, located inside the hood-like fleshy structure which dominates the head. The paired eyes are covered by a transparent eye-lid-like structure, which acts as a polarized light filter. This structure protects the eyes from glare, like built-in sunglasses, and also serves to keep windblown dust out of the eyes. This filter can be retracted when not needed. The eyes themselves are large, and pick up radiation well into the infrared portion of the spectrum, an adaptation to Muan Gwi's small red sun. Since the skull is fixed solidly in place, a Vegan cannot turn its head, but the fleshy hood containing the eyes can turn through a large arc. The mouth is a vertical slit in the upper thoracic region, with paired breathing/vocal slits on either side of it. Two mandibles are located inside the upper chest, and grind food between their opposing sets of teeth. Where the forearm and hand would be on a human, Vegans have three tentacles, which serve them as manipulative organs. Their legs end in broad, splayed feet, which prevent them from sinking into the soft sand. The urogenital opening is a vertical slit located ventrally in the lower abdomen. There are no external differences between sexes. Vegans have a number of adaptations to the arid dry region of Muan Gwi where they developed. Their tall, thin bodies are designed for maximum radiation of heat. The torso is covered with a thick integument, whose convoluted surface is richly supplied with blood vessels. By increasing or decreasing the supply of blood to the integument, heat radiation from the torso can be regulated to optimum effect (more during the day, less at night). This arrangement obviates the necessity for sweating and its consequent water loss. All orifices of the body can be sealed to prevent unnecessary moisture loss.

=History=
The Vegans received the [[Jump Drive]] about - 6000, from [[Vilani]]-influenced traders, and colonized several nearby worlds before being absorbed by the First Imperium in -4404. They were severely restricted under Vilani rule, as were all races who resisted being integrated into the rigid Vilani culture. Because of this, they welcomed Terran victory in the Interstellar Wars and the advent of the Rule of Man. The Vegan Polity prospered under the Rule of Man and survived the Long Night largely intact. However, with the advent of the Third Imperium, the Vegan area was broken into individual planetary states in accord with Imperial policy; non-humans were treated as full citizens but, in order to cement Imperial authority, no multiworld governmental units were allowed.

Under the Solomani, the Vegans were again restricted. Human colonies were founded on many Vegan worlds to maintain Solomani influence there, and Solomani governors were installed on all Vegan worlds. After the Solomani Rim War, the present Vegan Autonomous District was formed as a counterweight to the Solomani.
Vegan society is divided into hundreds of different tuhuir, which might be roughly translated as culture, philosophy, or tao. Each tuhuir has its own customs and traditions and its own interpretation of the proper way to live. The civil service which governs the Vegan District is a tuhuir which oversees and mediates among all the other tuhuir. Although rare, heretical and rebellious tuhuir do exist.

Archeology shows that the tuhuir were once separate societies, each associated with a particular geographic location, like countries on ancient Earth. Now, however, they are mixed together in complex patterns. Tuhuir are not hereditary; when a Vegan nears sexual maturity, he or she enters a period of search, which may last for many years. Eventually, the individual chooses a tuhuir; once made, the choice is for life. In practice, about 50% of all Vegans enter the tuhuir of their parents (the exact percentage varies with each tuhuir); about 0.5% find that they enjoy the search as a way of life and never join a tuhuir.
==All About The Traveller Mailing List==
The [[Traveller Mailing List]] (TML) is open to discussions on all aspects of Traveller. It exists as a means for the Traveller Player/GM to exchange ideas and discuss the various aspects of the Traveller System, and its universe. This includes discussions on [[Mongoose Traveller]], [[T20|Traveller D20]], [[GURPS Traveller]], [[Marc Miller's Traveller]], [[Traveller: The New Era]], [[MegaTraveller]] and Classic Traveller. This also includes the background.

===How Do I Unsubscribe?===
To leave the TML, visit http://lists.travellercentral.com/mailman/listinfo/tml
===How Do I use the List Processor?===
The list processor is the program that manages the lists. Visit http://lists.travellercentral.com/mailman/listinfo/tml for more info.
===How Do I Post a message to the list?===
There is only one valid mailing address for each of the mailing lists.

To post to the Traveller mailing list, send your message to '''tml@travellercentral.com'''.

==What are the etiquette rules for the lists?==

Here are a few guidelines for posting your thoughts to the TML. Please note that they are only guidelines. They are intended to make everybody's life easier by keeping the noise level down and keeping the content high.

* All messages should have a meaningful title. Please don't use "Re: Traveller-digest V1996 #2" or anything similar.
* Any message which is over about 150 lines should be labeled as LONG in the title. This gives a warning to those running terminal sessions over slow links. In many countries even local calls cost money.
* HTML isn't handled well by digest format, and some mail readers can't handle it at all. Please use plain English ASCII text.
* Embedded pictures and video are automatically stripped by the list software. Please post pictures and videos to a web site and provide a link.
* Please remember that the list membership is international. For some subscribers English is a second language. Please consider this before replying to messages.
* If you have a very long message that is not relevant to everybody, please consider making it available on an web site instead. Then announce it's existence on the list. A good example of material suitable for this is program listings and scripts.
* Discussion of current events without specific reference to Traveller, particularly of a religious/political nature is discouraged.
* Flame wars should be quickly extinguished or moved to personal email addresses.
* When quoting, please follow these guidelines:
** Please quote the minimum amount possible to show what you are responding to. Remember everybody has already read the original message, they just need to remember it! :-)
** Please don't paste in 5 generations of replies on a particular topic, or an entire 150 line message. Excerpts work best.
** Don't quote signatures.
** Don't quote a message just to say "me too"
** Remember that copyright applies on the net too. Get permission before extensively quoting a published work.
* Signatures should be limited to around 4 lines please.
* The TML members prefer [http://www.caliburn.nl/topposting.html Bottom] [http://www.idallen.com/topposting.html posting] for your replies.

==What subjects have been 'Done To Death' already on the TML==

The following subjects have previously been discussed in some depth on the TML. They invariably had staunch defenders on both sides, and led to some fiery debates. So, unless you have some new and inspired material, please don't stoke the coals.
===Is piracy economically feasible in the Third Imperium?===
This is one of the more flame war inducing topics on the TML.

The basic argument boils down to (on the pro side) that the early CT books included a "pirate" entry for the starship encounter table, and pirates make for more interesting gaming experience and should, therefore, be included. On the con side is a detailed economic and military analysis of the Third Imperium, where the Imperial navy has the money, ships, and manpower to, should it choose to do so, place an anti-piracy ship patrol in every system controlled by the Imperium of sufficient strength to deter any possible piracy attempt.

A parallel discussion occurs regarding what do the pirates take. In most cases the most valuable thing the victim has is the large merchant ship itself.

After several such discussions the [[Piracy|Sunbeard Declaration]] has been adopted. It is recommended that you read the declaration before asking questions (or making statements) about Piracy in the Third Imperium.

===Effects of rocks on Planets===
The reactionless drive postulated in MegaTraveller (Thruster Plates) allows unlimited acceleration times, so long as fuel and power are available. Given this fact, what's to stop players or GMs using asteroids (or small craft such as lifeboats) as relativistic (i.e. near the speed of light) projectiles against unsuspecting worlds? Doesn't this capability give any spacecraft owner access to a weapon of unbelievable power?

Basically, yes. There is no canon reference to this ever having happened, but the physics used in MegaTraveller clearly allows it. Traveller the New Era shied away from this problem by introducing a new, reaction-based drive, [[HEPlaR]] (Which, incidentally, has its own problems).

===What is a Feudal Technocracy?===
Starting in May 1994, there was a thread on the TML regarding the definition of a Feudal Technocracy (Government Type 5) in Traveller. It originated as a spin-off from a discussion between David Johnson and Hans Rancke about the Sword Worlds.

It became clear that different people had very different ideas about what was and was not a Feudal Technocracy. Hans favored emphasizing the feudal aspect while David emphasized the technocratic aspect, using the term 'practice of technology'. He approximately defined this as requiring industrial activity in all possible areas for a certain TL, producing sufficient surplus resources to support research, development, production and operation and support the expansion of the economy and stated that he regarded this as the prime requirement of a technocracy.

However, Bill White has calculated that the average FT in the Imperium has a population in the 100,000's, insufficient to support the broad spread of industry David requires by the above definition (David believes a minimum population of the order of millions is required).

Also, a number of people (including me) had expressed the preference that 'critical technology' governments, who govern by virtue of control of some critical technology, be possibly describable as Feudal Technocracies. This type of society is possible at the lower population levels at which FT's commonly occur in the Imperium.

Given these arguments David made the following comment: "Maybe we have to accept that, in Traveller terms, there is no distinction between feudal technocracy, technocratic oligarchy, technocratic feudalism, or anything else that might be considered in any way `feudal' or `technocratic' since neither of these terms exist in any of the other government codes." Any such government could be described with a government code of 5. While David dislikes the vagueness of the resulting government type, it does embrace all of the proposed examples of FT's, including his own. This was the compromise conclusion that we reached.

===What is the role (if any) of fighters in Traveller space combat?===
Fighters are found in all versions of Traveller. Their 'canon-ness' is undisputed. The problem is that it is quite difficult to see what role they are designed to fill.

'''View #1:Fighters have a limited role'''

Unlike the current day, the future history of Traveller does not provide us with the kind of weapons that allow fighters to become a useful weapons platform. There is no Traveller equivalent of the Exocet missile, able to kill a warship with a single hit. Traveller fighters are limited to the same maximum acceleration as larger ships, so they cannot outmanoeuvre the enemy. They only seem to be useful against lightly armed and armoured targets, such as civilian vessels.

'''View #2 Fighters can play a major part'''

Waves of fighters can overwhelm a capital ship, if sufficient numbers are employed.

===Is GURPS:Traveller considered completely Canon?===
The GURPS Traveller universe is officially considered an alternate Traveller universe, which diverges from the Official Traveller universe in 1116, shortly before [[Dulinor]] is to have assassinated [[Strephon]] and started the [[Rebellion]].

Like every release before it, GURPS Traveller both forced some changes and added new things to the mix. GT, being the first Traveller release based upon an existing RPG ruleset, was required to use the existing GURPS rules as much as possible. Steve Jackson Games also required the GT releases to meet their high standards for publication. The number and scope of these changes ([[GURPS Traveller: Behind the Claw]], 20% space penalty for streamlining ships, Jump masking, Marines in battledress, and others) make some feel that it's not 'real' Traveller and won't use it. Everyone else feels they're all the poorer for it.

===Is there a list of all star systems in the Imperium?===
There are several.
* http://www.u.arizona.edu/~bjohnson/archives/sectors.zip - a list of the original Digest Group Publications data which was originally on Genie. It is dated 1116 i.e. at the eve of the rebellion.
* [[:Category: Sectors with sector data]] - list of sectors in the wiki with an attached data file.
* http://www.travellermap.com/ - an online interactive astrogation map which uses an interface similar to Google Maps, includes all the sector data.
===Is there a list of ''Traveller'' books?===
There is a relatively complete [[:Category:Ludography|ludography]], and a list of products organized by [[Published|publisher]].
===What do you recommend for reading (or viewing)?===
Peruse the collection of [[More Reading]] for various books, games, and movies which can inspire your ''Traveller'' game.

===What are the effects of spacing?===
Just what are the effects of being escorted off ship into vacuum with no vacuum suit (aka spacing)? What happens when that bolt of energy from the pirate/navy ship (take your choice) chasing the PCs blows a gaping hole through the hull and into the bridge? Here is a description adapted from a number of answers posted to the list in September, 1996.

:Briefly, survival in vacuum is probably possible for a minute or so. Consciousness will go away much more rapidly, with the victim having about 10 seconds to react before losing consciousness.
:Upon losing consciousness, one would become paralysed, then go into generalized convulsions and then become paralysed once again. During this time, water vapor will form rapidly inside the body, causing it to swell to perhaps twice its normal volume unless it is restrained by a pressure suit. The victim, however, will not explode.
:Meanwhile, the heart rate may rise initially, but will fall rapidly thereafter. After a minute or so, the circulation of blood slows to a halt. After the initial rush of air from the lungs during decompression, gas and water vapor will continue to flow outward through the airways. This will cool the body, but the mouth and nose will reach near-freezing temperatures quite rapidly.
:It is very unlikely that a human suddenly exposed to vacuum would have more than 5 to 10 seconds to help himself. If immediate help is at hand, although one's appearance and condition will be grave, it is reasonable to assume that recompression to a tolerable pressure within 60 to 90 seconds could result in survival, and possibly in rather rapid recovery. Neurological problems, including blindness and other defects in vision, are also common after exposure, but usually disappear fairly rapidly.

On a more personal level, this from John Lambert who went through it:
:I was in an airlock in a jumpsuit when it was vented to (near) vacuum. (True story!) The first indications were the noise and what felt like a punch to my chest as the air in my lungs escaped. The airlock then filled with a cloud of condensing water vapor. [..] I had plenty of time to locate and don my oxygen mask.

===How do Jumps less than 1 parsec work?===

What happens if you jump less than 1 parsec? Many people have asked if it is possible to jump within a system, or to just outside the system.

Basically, it is possible and it works exactly like a 1 parsec jump. It takes a week with the normal uncertainty factor. The amount of fuel used is also the same as for 1 parsec - (1 divided by the maximum jump range) times the total amount of jump fuel for a full length jump. e.g. A 1 parsec jump in a jump 3 capable ship will be 1/3 of the fuel required for a 3 parsec jump. A point to remember though, in a week the solar system may have moved a bit.
===How do I obtain BITS Traveller material?===
BITS products should be easily obtained in the UK through local games stores. BITS have also signed a distribution agreement with Steve Jackson Games in the US. Stock should be available from [http://www.warehouse23.com/ Warehouse 23]. A summary of BITS products can be found at the BITS web site http://www.bits.org.uk

===What's that strange code I see at the bottom of TML postings?===
That's the IMTU (In My Traveller Universe) or Traveller Geek Code. It's a way of describing how your own Traveller universe is constructed (and how it might vary from the 'official' universe). For more details see http://downport.com/eaglestone/imtu.html.

===How canonical is DGP material?===

Digest Group Publications has long been involved in the development of Traveller. CT Book 8 - [[Robots (book)|Robots]] was primarily written by [[Joe Fugate]]. Much of the work done in developing the basic MegaTraveller rules was done by DGP, who also produced MT supplements under their own name. DGP were in contact with Marc Miller during the development of MT.

There has been some discussion as to whether some aspects of DGP publications are canon. The general feeling on the TML appears to be that DGP publications are, for the most part, canon.
===Whatever Happened to DGP?===

With the March 1993 issue of the MegaTraveller Journal (#4) DGP officially ceased supporting Traveller. They cited the release of Traveller the New Era, the loss of Marc Miller's active involvement with the design of the game and the fact that DGP could not control the direction of Traveller's development as reasons. At the same time DGP announced the impending arrival of AI (Not Technology and Magic, but Technology as Magic!) their new, wholly DGP-produced RPG.

Unfortunately AI was never published.

Eventually DGP ceased trading, and the DGP name and properties were purchased by Roger Sanger.

Following the demise of GDW in December 1995, Roger posted a message suggesting that DGP would be interested in producing new materials for the new version of Traveller. It was also suggested that DGP would consider re-releasing previous DGP products, possibly on CDROM or in a repackaged format. In January 1996 Roger announced that DGP would be producing a new RPG product, including alternate history and science fiction elements as well as elements from AI. In October 1996 Roger reported that DGP was seeking a renewal of their licence to produce Traveller material.

As yet, none of these developments have materialised.

===What was T4 supplement F?===
The spines of the main T4 supplements each carried a traveller-hexadecimal style number. At the time of Imperium Games' demise all of the supplements from 1 to G had been published, except F.

Supplement F was to be ''Nobles''.

===What do I need to play GURPS Traveller?===

GURPS Traveller is now a range of sourcebooks in its own right and GURPS itself covers a multitude of settings. What does the starting GURPS Traveller player need in the way of materials?

The absolute minimum you can get away with is GURPS Lite, a downloadable copy of which is available at http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=SJG30-6094 and the GURPS Traveller rulebook.

The next level of sophistication would be GURPS Basic Set, Third Edition Revised and GURPS Traveller

SJ Games recommend: GURPS Traveller, GURPS Basic Set, Compendium I and GURPS Space with GURPS Ultra-Tech I and II as optional extras.

Discussion on the TML has lead to the following suggestions on additional GURPS material you may find useful (in addition to any GURPS Traveller books that may take your fancy):
* GURPS Bio-Tech
* GURPS Robots
* GURPS Vehicles
* GURPS Psionics

===How do I contact Marc Miller?===

Be aware that Marc is a busy guy. If you've got questions about Traveller that need a quick answer, try the TML, or this FAQ. Having said all that, you can contact Marc through his web site: http://www.farfuture.net/
I chose the red on black to meet the design of the books, perhaps the other versions would be better in the colours of their books. [[User:Dcorrin|Dcorrin]] 20:35, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
:Indeed, Dan - except that the MT and TNE don't have a set cover colour LOL. The HF one could be mauve/purple, but the MT one will be tricky - I'll have a think about it. Thanks for the feedback, Dan :D [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 09:04, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
::The T4 thumbnail could do with being rsized to a bit smaller, too. [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 09:05, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
== Hiver Sector Naming ==
I remember while creating the sector name cross reference charts e.g. [[Sectors_A1]], that the Hivers do not have their own "names" for the sectors, rather they use whatever nomenclature that the group that they dealing with. (This is from one of the Hiver modules). Where are these Hiver names coming from? [[User:Dcorrin|Dcorrin]] 13:06, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

: OK .... so, I have no idea what you're referring to .... I've looked at the list on the link in your entry - I haven't contributed to that list, so I can't vouch for where any of the Hiver sector names came from. The ''only'' Hiver related sector I've had anything to do with here is Spica (cos it's what I know best). But what I ''can'' do is to check CT AM7 for the sector names and double check then reference them in the [[Sectors_A1]] list. Would that be helpful? [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 08:49, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

::So I wasn't coherent. First of all it is not any changes that you made anywhere. If you look at [[Sectors_A1]] you will note that there are columns for Imperial (and being an imperial library that is where the main sectors articles should be stored), Aslan, K'kree, Vargr and Zhodani. Note that Hiver is missing from the list. So when I was first researching the sector names to put into the cross-reference chart, I noted from somewhere that the Hivers do not have their own names for sectors (ignoring the absurd notion that any empire other than possibly the Solomani would use the exact same grid system as the Imperium). So being a self-appointed Hiver expert, I would like you to confirm this and/or discover why there is data on Hiver names for the sectors. [[User:Dcorrin|Dcorrin]] 12:40, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

:::"a self appointed Hiver expert" - thanks Dan, I like that :D "Note that Hiver is missing from the list." - yup. OK, so now I'm clear - 1) research why Hivers don't have their own names for sectors, cite references/sources, etc, 2) try to identify sources of names for Hiver sectors (canon or not). No problem, Dan :D [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 16:57, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

:: I know that [http://home.earthlink.net/~ngc5139/sf.html Leroy Guatney] did a great deal of work in the Hiver area during the {{HIWG}} era. Some of that work has made it into the wiki which may be the source of some of new material. [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] 12:56, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

::::Yeah, I've seen those before - from my communications with MWM I suspect strongly that those names are *non-canon*; however, that shouldn't stop us from including them, as long as they're clearly labelled as "non-canon". [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 16:57, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

== BFB or Paperback ==

I would prefer not to use the term BFB for every single book in the bibliography. With three exceptions, all of the Traveller books have been paperbacks (T20 book, GT core book, GURPS IW core book). To my mind, the only BFB are the reprint books.

To be techniclly precise we should be using the terms "hardback", "perfect bound softcover" or "saddle-stitched softcover". We also used "digest" to indicate the smaller books.

[[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] 10:40, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
:Thank you for that - I can see where you're coming from. My preference then would be to use the technical terms, including "digest". [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 12:04, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

== Infobox Books not working correctly ==

Your problem with the GDW books and "ass books" categories are due to the categories being automatically included by the [[Template: InfoboxBook]]. This was a addition [[User: Dcorrin]] made a few days ago to allow creating author's lists of books by category.

What it means is that you need to follow the (currently unwritten) rules for inputing the publisher and version of the book. In this case, use the full spelling <nowiki>[[Game Designers Workshop]]</nowiki> and <nowiki>[[Classic Traveller]]</nowiki> respectively. This will fix both problems.

Dan did this without going through all the entries to fix them properly. We will be finding these little tweaks for a year. [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] 21:52, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
:Thanks for your help! :D [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 22:00, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

::fixing canon listing: use "canon=yes", not "canonical=yes". [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] 22:02, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

:::Going though all the entries is a lot of work. I added some additional code a day after to handle some of the common variaitons originally it would only handle <nowiki>[[text]]</nowiki>, so I added support for <nowiki>[[text|alt]]</nowiki>. This means the templates such as <nowiki>{{GDW}}</nowiki> should work as well. However they need to all be links, if people think that it is necessary, I can support non reference entries too... :The only cost I can think of related to Traveller is the cost of the various rule sets and suplements that you think you might need. Take a look at some of the published products in the ludography. Alternatively, follow the links on the community portals page to current publishers.
:Originally the game was meant as a face-to-face role play situation. Since the change of technology has made it possible to do this on-line, I am certain that there may be a way for you to interact.
You are welcome, thanks for starting/hosting/managing a Traveller wiki. I didn't have to do a lot of work to figure out the numbers, as Anthony Jackson already did all the work on his site: http://maps.travellercentral.com

== Sunbane ==
This used to be the name of one of my servers, during the time that I was listmom for the TML, I wonder if the name is related. The server served as an FTP site as well, so people would ftp sunbane.engrg.uwo.ca for access to traveller-related data...
[[User:Dcorrin|Dcorrin]] 12:30, 7 April 2006 (PDT)
:It would not surprise me. I've never been able to find the source of the name from anywhere. Google.... "For many years official data files existed, first on GENII, then on sunbane." I'll add a note to that effect.

== Gateway to Destiny ==
I was fixing the Akeen entry to use the data from the Gateway to destiny book. I realies there is a whole bunch of "canon" data in this book. There are a large group of races, a number of empires discussed, complete writeups on four sectors, and a number of peronalities. Did you want me to go through a dump the library data from this book in to the Wiki?

Similiar question about the GURPS Material. It's a little longer, and will need to be typed (and edited) rather than cut and pasted.

:There are only two questions that really need answering. First we want all the data that we can in the wiki. The questions are 1) is it library type data (self-explanitory) 2) Is the content a significant part of the book. e.g. if the data was transcribed could you forgoe buying the book? - I have a category "complete" for things like 101 Religions, so we can put the reglion name and a quick library like summary, but leave off enough information that one would have to buy the book to make full use of the information. This allows the information to become widespread use, and those that want to make use of it would be encouraged to buy the product.

:We have permission to use the Library Data, and things like the Imperial Encyclopedia for the various versions of traveller, but not for others. So if this supplement has this information as background, and a lot of additional stuff then okay. (The alien races books have a ton of info on the races, we put a page or two worth of information here, the book is still a necessary resource for someone wanting to use the race fully). [[User:Dcorrin|Dcorrin]] 18:17, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

::OK. I'll post some of the material, keeping the stuff limited to the library data. It will make an interesting addition.

== Author Credits ==
Thomas,
:We should be linking all the authors in the articles (such as TD, JTAS etc), and books so that we can look at the wanted pages to find high article count authors to set up pages for them as time permits. [[User:Dcorrin|Dcorrin]] 19:40, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

::I'll do my best to find these sources for the entries for the articles. Most of the TD entries were borrowed from a website which posted only the TD issue, not the individual article. This, like other issues, should be put into a Posting Guidelines page and then linked on the front page. [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] 19:46, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
Me too! I can't seem to get [[:Template:NavigationBox]] and/or [[:Template:ThirdImperiumEmperors]] to work. There was a few #if in the NavigationBox (which I stole from Wikipedia), but even though we should have a version of Wiki which supports this, I don't think they work. I removed them, but the box doesn't look right still. [[User:Dcorrin|Dcorrin]] 20:44, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
:Give me a little time to work through this mess. I'll see if I can help. Wikipedia marks these as "special" so they are more complex than others. [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] 01:55, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
::Thanks Thomas, it looks good. I have been waiting for the #if to work for some time... My original idea for the LE template was to supply a place for a reference (or list of references), if present then the article would be marked as canon (though some references are non-canon e.g. judges guild), and then a nice format for the reference would be done (A box in the corner say). Of course we needed to get the bibliography completed first.
This is why we have the source in this type of box (blank at start of line)
as it is an item to be worked on site wide. calling themself ''awaken'', while others might call them vampire. I currently rewrite the [[Muecke]] article, and hope to fill out some more gaps soon. --[[User:Kraehe|Kraehe]] 11:34, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
== Inconsistant Publish ==

The [[Sword of the Knight Publications]] entry, as a publisher is good, however the published list is a list of the magazine. I think it would be more consistent to just put the three magazines in the body, with the current list being the body for the missing Traveller Chronicle entry. (There are probably many other inconsistencies, but I just noticed this one).
Hi people. As a result of my own ongoing project (Spica) I've developed a focus on UWPs, Trade Classfications, etc. so for the time being I'll be focussing on those aspects here. Also I'll be around a bit more here than I have been of late, hopefully being useful! [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 10:40, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
===BFB or Paperback?===
I've noticed that some of my entries for book formats have changed from "BFB" to "paperback". I'm trying not to get into some sort of weird revert war here, so I need to know if I can carry on using "BFB" or not and, if not, why not. Thanks [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 07:28, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Did I change more than just the [[Hivers (Alien Module)]] book? I know I changed that one when I replaced the InfoboxBook template. (I liked the idea of the Also See). See your talk page for my explination. [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] 10:42, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

:OK, I've had a think about this problem, and agree with the idea of using technical book-making jargon. I think that we should have a page or pages describing the various formats (without calling those pages BFB) across the rulesets. We could redirect BFB and LBB to that/those pages. I'd personally opt for just one page covering all the formats. [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 15:24, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
== Problems with colspan and if in templates ==

Can you take a look at the entry [[Sol (star)]] and the InfoboxStar template: [[Template:InfoboxStar]]. I was trying to make the image optional, so I took the <nowiki>

{{{image}}}

and put a {{if|{{{image|}}|</nowiki> around it, but the combination doesn't seem to work. I tried the #if as well, but that seemed worse. [[User:Dcorrin|Dcorrin]] 20:58, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
== More Help ==

As a seeming expert in DPL, I need some help with a template. I have a list of books by author broken down by category. The only issue is that I don't want the Ludography category printed out with the others. See [[Loren Wiseman]] article. I like the breakdown by challenge/classic traveller/etc. but I don't think that the Ludography category should appear in this list. (The Navigationbox was probably not the best choice either...) ==Page Help needed! (Several issues involved)==
I've just created the page [[Understanding Traveller]]. For some weird reason, the page seems to have added Categories to itself (not a problem, but I was expecting to have to put them in myself!). *BUT*: the Categories bar on the page has [[GDW Books]] in it; there is no Category called that, but there *is* a Category called [[GDW_List]]. Also, I cannot get the book Infobox to show that the book is canonical; I type canon=yes and it shows "no" - what am I doing wrong? Finally, I noticed when cross checking the Categories bar that the Categories bar for the [[The Traveller Book]] has a link called "Ass Books" - wandalism, eye preezoom? Any help on sorting these out would be appeciated, cos I ent no Wiki genius ;) [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 21:35, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
:OK, sorted the "GDW Books" Category out by creating it (I didn't understand what was being asked of me by the software when it created a Category page for me to edit!). The "Ass Books" Category is still there though and I still can't get the book infobox to show the book as canonical. [[User:Gruffty|Gruffty]] 21:44, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
:Well, is it addictive? That is one good question... I suppose you could call it that, I started thirty years ago and came back to Traveller recently.
:In looking over the list of names for the database that I am building I have noticed that the simple use of the first two letters of the sector (along with the 4 digit location) may confuse the exact spelling of world name (for example “Shela An 0732” could be confused with “Shela An”; if there were a world name of “Shela An”).
I've started 2 accounts there. I didn't try to hide it. I used to use my real name when I edited Wikis. Then I had threats to stalk me over the Internet. I'm using my real name much less now but I still need to use it for stuff that I've already put on the Internet under my real name. I couldn't find the admins on Fiction Wikia. Can you tell them? Hiver Calendar
2008-06-18T10:06:28Z

Gruffty: /* Basic Units */

In [[410]], the [[Hiver|Hivers]] began moving the [[Hive Federation]] capital from [[Guaran (world)|Guaran]] to [[Glea (world)|Glea]]. The move ended in [[490]]. Glea itself was settled by the Hivers in [[-866]]. The Hiver calendar is based on the period of Glea around its star, New Primary. The calendar was adopted at the urging of M. Martinka.
== Basic Units ==
*Glea rotates on its axis once in 22 standard hours. This is called a "cycle" by the Hivers.
*The Hive Federation year is 143 cycles, or about 179 standard days, in length.
*Glea orbits New Primary with a period of 358 standard days; consequently there are ''slightly more'' than two Hiver years to every standard/Imperial year.

== Base Point ==
The Hiver calendar commences with the year 1, cycle 001, on which Glea officially became the capital of the Hive Federation (IY [[410]]).

== Date Format ==

Dates are expressed by year/cycle; for example: 105/042.

==Date Equivalents==
1111 = 1401
