Greetings & Permission Inquiry (2007)[edit]

I've been thinking about getting involved in this project for some weeks, but not gotten around to it. Today I was browsing and came across a reference that I happened to have the information on readily available. So I clicked on the link and got directed to an edit page... where the first thing I see is an admonition about not posting copyrighted material!
Well, what I had planned to write was pretty much all copyrighted material (to wit, canonical information). I assume it would have been all right to proceed, but really, typing in copyrighted material right above a statement that I'm not to do so seemed a bit thick.
I also assume that the escape clause is the 'without permission' bit. Presumably you have permission. But I've been hunting around for a specific statement to that effect, and can't find it anywhere. It was probably staring me in the face all the time, but allow me to suggest adding a 'note that you do have permission to type in Traveller material subject to the following conditions...' to that admonition?
Anyway, I hope to do a bit of the good work here in the not too distant future.
- Hans Rancke-Madsen

Hi Hans, We have permission from Marc to publish "library" information, e.g. anything that would be in the library entries for a module, General background information etc. Also we are covered under fair use for things like low-resuolution images of book covers, and tables of contents/back cover advertising information for books.
- Dcorrin 15:36, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Hans, just to make you feel better the original permission is posted on the talk page of the Sources Template, which we use to make sure that the copyrighted information is properly sourced according to the wikia rules.

New Question (2007)[edit]

New question: I noticed that there are duplicate entries about the Aokhalte, one under 'Aokhalte' and one under 'Aokhalte clan'. How do I delete an entire entry? Note: I added some information to the 'Aokhalte' entry, so they're no longer identical. The one to delete is the one labeled 'Aokhalte clan'.

You need admin access to delete a page. I have done so, usually people would create a re-direct page. e.g. #REDIRECT [[Aokhalte]] as the entire text of the page.
- Dcorrin 12:11, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

(non)-Canon conflict question (2007)[edit]

There is a discussion on the Category talk:Canon about how to resolve the problem of conficting articles on the same topic. Please come and offer an opinion as we may need a new policy. Tjoneslo 17:17, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Suggested addition to basic page (2007)[edit]

I'd like to suggest an addition to the basic page template, namely a tag similar to the 'discussion' tag, but meant for material that is perfectly undisputed, but just not found in public library databases. Something called 'GM information' or 'Referee information' or 'GM/Ref Only'.

As an example, everybody knows that the Darrians somehow caused their sun to flare, but the information about the specific scientific projects involved (and the truth about the Star Trigger) is not public knowledge.

These kind of secrets are not really suitable for discussion pages (IMO). Discussion pages are for such meta-issues as which of several mutually contradictory facts to chose, and why having Tarnis' flares devastate electronics parsecs away doesn't fit with Darrian not being burnt to a crisp.

To this point we've been using "Page Name (GM)" for the GM only information, then linking the to this page from the main page with a "see also [[page (GM)]]" link. The GM pages belong only in the category: GM, leaving the base page in the library and all the other appliciable categories.
One of the difficulties I've had with this is knowing which information to push to the GM category page. Because the library covers several thousand years of history, items which are a mystery in one era are well known facts in another. Other items are never discovered (like the Droyne/Ancients connection).
If you have a better suggestion, post it.
Tjoneslo 03:43, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
I know that's how you've been doing it. I tried it myself with Imperiallines. I thought it would have been easier and more intuitive if I could have just added a GM info page directly from the relevant page.
As for the difficulty you mention, I agree. It is a problem. I think the best solution would be to have a library data page for each relevant period and then, if necessary, a GM only page linked to each LD page. So you might, for instance, have a page called 'Nugiiri (IW)' with all the information about the Nugiiri from Interstellar Wars. And linked to that a GM only page that says "The Nugiiri are actually Droyne, etc.". Then you'd have a page called 'Nugiiri' (I suggest that the default should be the Classic Era just before the OTU/GTU change point, i.e. around 1116) which just says "Old name for the Droyne of [World]".

Wikia Blogs (2007)[edit]

This wiki is included in our new Wikia Blogs feature. To get involved, just add snippets of this wiki's best articles to MediaWiki:Blog snippet each day and that content will appear on the Wikia Gaming Blog. Please see Wiki to blog for an introduction and Wikia Blogs for a list of wikis involved in this. Angela talk 15:47, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Efate Run Campaign, a new look, and editing? (2007)[edit]

I was editing the Forum: The Efate Run and clicked the preview button. Now I can't seem to get back to the raw text that I was editing. When I try, I'm told that if I leave without saving, I'll lose the changes I've made. But I don't want to save just yet; I want to edit some more first. A preview isn't much good if you can't do that, is it? : - Rancke 12:57, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I just tried editing the efate run page, and tried preview, and everything looked normal to me... Worked fine previewing this edit too.
- Dcorrin 13:07, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, after looking all over the page I found the button in the toolbar to get me back to the text. I'm used to just pressing the 'back' arrow of the window navigation panel.

How about a template for UWP information in readable form? (2007)[edit]

I'm relatively new to Traveller (GURPS Traveller is my first real experience) and as such, I'm unable to read UWP (and similar short formats) in a single glance. This kind of short format is excellent when you need to detail an entire sector on a single page of paper, but for a wiki it would be much more sensible to have a simple template with that very same information in a readable format. Mcv 13:21, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for the suggestion. I've added it to our Projects page. It may take a little setup to get that to work as expected. Tjoneslo

Main page Special Projects (2007)[edit]

The Special Project for this month was my way of updating the front page of the wiki every once in a while, to make sure new visitors didn't think it was abandoned. Usually I just pick something at random from the Projects page, or that strikes my fancy. Below is the list of previous selections. This is a request for suggestions.

Update: List has been moved to Special Project talk page. Tjoneslo 14:19, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

I feel all special for effectively being the new Special Project. I will state that everyone can help: I'm only human, and I know there's got to be errors hidden in my maps. So I'd appreciate it if people can proof them, and we can get any errors fixed. --Rindis 17:59, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

New Milestone reached![edit]

According the the statistics on the front page, we've just surpassed 5000 articles in the Wiki. This makes us a gold star large wiki. Today is a celebration day!
- Tjoneslo 14:16, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

The Hiver makes Its Mark! :D[edit]

According to the "Top Content" box on the right of the page, my article on "Lost" Traveller books is one of the most highly visisted, most popular and highly rated articles! W00T! <Hiver...Hiver...Hiver...> Gruffty 20:10, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Let me scrape you off that ceiling... I think that the Top Content list is just an alphabetic sort of articles (or I'll let you manipulate me into believing that more people need to know the definition of !xeng'ri). --Sstefan 20:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
We don't seem to have any traffic information - I don't know why. The rating system works though. Dcorrin 22:41, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
The traffic information seems a little vague. I know the general page views information is turned off because Wikia uses several cache servers to handle the load (and thus can't count page views accurately). If you really want to know, go ask on the wikia watercooler forum. Tjoneslo 13:34, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Bah. Thought there had to be another reason for it, other than my article :( Gruffty 23:52, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Upgraded Wiki Version (2007)[edit]

This should have no impact on anyone or anything. Wikia (our host) has just finished upgrading our wiki software to version 1.12. If you notice any weirdness with the pages, post a note here or on the Wikia forums. Tjoneslo 18:01, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

So what is new in version 1.12? Dcorrin 19:10, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Monaco skin (2008)[edit]

Hullo! I am Kirkburn, your friendly local Wikia Gaming Helper!

I've just set your site to default to a Monaco skin (sapphire in this case) - this is the new Wikia default skin, and is now the main actively developed Wikia platform. As a sucessor to Quartz, it comes with even more customizability - you can find out more on w:c:inside:Monaco Skin Customization, where you can also find out info about the widgets available.

An admin can set the default site skin via the skin section on Special:Preferences, or by editing MediaWiki:AdminSkin. If users wish to see another skin than the default, they can untick "See custom wiki skins (recommended)" on the same page. Kirkburn (talk) 19:12, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

I liked the new look when I logged in this morning. It appears to give a better overview on my laptop; now to see what it will look like from the desktop at work....--Sstefan 13:52, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Wikia Gaming IRC channel[edit]

Hullo! I am Kirkburn, your friendly local Wikia Gaming Helper!

You may be interested to know there is a Wikia gaming IRC channel, #wikia-gaming on chat.freenode.net, where you can hop on, ask for help from users of other gaming wikis, or offer your own experiences. If you are not familiar with IRC clients, you can access it from http://irc.wikia.com/gaming.

Different people may be on sporadically, but we organize weekly chats at a fixed time so we can get the most number of people online at the same time to ask and answer questions, or just to hang out. The admins of some of Wikia's biggest gaming wikis (e.g. WoW, Halo) often attend them. You can find the time for the next chat by following this link. Template:W:Next gaming IRC chat

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me! Kirkburn (talk) 11:13, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Non Traveller resources[edit]

Came accros a webpage for some nice cardboard tanks and terrain. Is there a page I can wack these kind of resources? I want to make sure i dont double up another page, nor break the style of the wiki.

Any help would be appreciated. Voradams 05:36, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

The Traveller RPG:Community Portal page has become a link dumping ground. It's also listed on the front page. If you can't find an appropriate section, create a new one. Tjoneslo 14:43, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

GT: Interstellar Wars Ships[edit]

Adding GT:IW ships into the wiki. Can someone check to see if I have done this correctly, my first full blown article Hero Class Private Merchant. And can someone tell me if SJG will allow the details used (paraphrasing not quoting). Thanks. Voradams 09:29, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Looks great. Paraphrasing is fine, just no quoting. I made a few changes (use the {{LE}} template for categories, use a link in the sources). Tjoneslo 12:36, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Downloading Wiki data (2008)[edit]

Is it possabel to download the wiki data...I am downloading and installing apache2 and media wiki (mmmmmm....apt-get...yum). Just so i can edit to my hearts content and test (AND SPELL CHECK) before uploading Voradams 12:09, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

http://wikistats.wikia.com/dbdumps/traveller/pages_current.xml.gz will download the current (as of yesterday or so) set of pages. This is a 5.2Mb file. http://images.wikia.com/traveller/images/images.tar is the list of images. This is 22Mb and hasn't been updated in more than a year. Tjoneslo 12:52, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Mongoose Spinward marches v GT:Spinward Marches v CT: Spinward Marches (2008)[edit]

You must be sick of me Tom. Just picked up mongoose supplement spinward marches. Given that Mongoose default setting is dated 1105 (Same as CT, excpet it is dated here in the wiki as 1115) which is BEFORE the 5th frontier war. GT SM is by the same author , but in an alternaative timeline. With this wealth of canon which may clash with CT in the future (especially if Mongoose uses the 5th FW as a meta game) do we split mongoose UWP data from CT, or assume Mongoose == CT in the UWP stakes, and mark anything Martin has in GT to be canon excpet when it is implicity post assignation? Voradams 01:32, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Anyone who contributes to the wiki can bug me as much as they would like. Unless there is a huge disconnect between the data in Spinward Marches, GURPS Traveller: Behind the Claw and The Spinward Marches book. I'd rather assume these are all describing the same time and place. Resolving Canon issues (like this) should probably be done case by case. Just keep in mind that the usual disclaimers regarding The Spinward Marches book apply, with the additional caveat that Mongoose has not officially published its Online Traveller Fan site policy. Tjoneslo 02:26, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

UWP for Spinwards Marches[edit]

I have CT: Spinward Marches, Behind the Claw, Survival Margin, Mongoose The Spinward Marches and the Regency Sourcebook (shudder). Is there a quick and dirty way to update all of the worlds in the Marches, or does each world have to be edited seperately? I dont have the Hard time book, did it have the modified UWP for the Marches, and the great news that Behind the Claw uses a different format than Interstellar Wars and Rim of Fire......joy! IS it worth ignoring the SM world data from BtC? Voradams 03:17, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Taking the questions in approximate order:
  1. No, there is no quick and dirty way of editing all of the entries. You generally need to go through them one at a time, What did you want to do?
  2. Hard Times has no modified UWPs for the Spinward Marches Sector.
  3. There are some changes from the CT era to the BTC era UWPs. But you will need to check all the BTC errata (posted on the SJGames site) and/or included with GURPS Traveller: Far Trader. There is also more updates in GURPS Traveller: Sword Worlds. In general the changes are subtle, except when the errata didn't catch the big changes.

New Releases[edit]

Can someone who is more wiki-savvy than me add the release of Field Manual by Spica Publishing onto the new releases/latest news thingy (top right of main page)? Thanks {{SUBST:User:Spica/sig2}} 20:55, February 22, 2011 (UTC)

New, New Look (2011)[edit]

I've just been searching around the help pages in Wikia and have discovered that Admins have access to a thing called "ThemeDesigner" and that the standard Wikia skin can be further modified via this system. It appears that this can also be done by installing a custom css file for our pages.
Now I can't do it, I'm not an Admin. But could we consider tweaking the appearance of the Traveller Wiki in the New Look (I've said elsewhere how ugly I think it looks). At the very least could we look at widening the centre panel that the content appears in? Is this even possible? It would be an improvement, the larger graphics we have look silly with only a few characters width of text running down the left hand margin of the panel.
- Imperial Grand Survey 03:34, March 21, 2011 (UTC)

I am not a web designer and the intricacies of css elude me at the best of times. Create the following page: User:Imperial Grand Survey/global.css, any css you put into this page is custom loaded for you when you view the Traveller wiki. If you find any css settings you like, I can move them into the site global css page: Mediawiki:Wikia.css. Please note, there are some weird limitations on what we (as the Wiki administrators) can and can not do to alter the site. Mostly driven by the need to make sure all the advertising is seen clearly.
Or go through any of the other wikia hosted wikis and find a design (or designs) you like and provide a link. I can cut/paste code better than anyone.
- Tjoneslo 14:19, March 21, 2011 (UTC)

OK, I do do a few websites and I have a sort of grasp of css. I'll have a fiddle and see what I can come up with. Questions that obviously flow from this are :
  • Is there a base version of the current NewWikia css outline that I can use as a starting point?
  • Any suggestions as to what people would like?
- Imperial Grand Survey 10:39, March 22, 2011 (UTC)

OK, not so easy. Have all the stylesheet here and changing a few things (like a black background on the outer margin to look like the Classic books and widening the centre panel , and NOTHING changes. Will keep trying, but it's looking like I might have to admit defeat.

My fault. I gave you the wrong link. User:Imperial Grand Survey/wikia.css. You can look at mine User:Tjoneslo/wikia.css where the changes I make worked. I'm going to revert my changes tomorrow though.
- Tjoneslo 03:00, March 27, 2011 (UTC)

OK, the changes I made previewed and then didn't change, this explains all.
- Imperial Grand Survey 23:57, March 27, 2011 (UTC)
I've had some limited success. What do people think of this User:Imperial_Grand_Survey/wikia.css I still have to tidy up some of the buttons and the bottom tool bar which does some funny things when scrolling, but it mostly works for me.
- Imperial Grand Survey 01:17, March 29, 2011 (UTC)

Far Frontiers Sector maps (2011)[edit]

After a long delay it's finished. I've only done one sector with the data from Traveller Chronicle, given the author of that version has been concerned about his IP ending up on the wiki. Even though it appears he's given permission for the material that's already been published to remain and this data was taken from the sector map that is already here I would assume that it's merely presenting that data in a different format and was therefore OK I have refrained for two reasons. Firstly it's a lot more work and secondly better safe than sorry. If people are desperate to have it, let me know.
Vanguard Reaches next.

Pedant vs. Pendant (2017)[edit]

Been driving me nuts and I couldn't figure out why. Corrected pendant to pedant. Oy vey.

Organization of Charted Space Overview (2017)[edit]

We need to come up with a way of organizing these articles. I had them thematically arranged.
What rationale did you use, Thomas?
Steve, your thoughts?
