Vargr Campaigns
(220 to 348): A series of wars, encounters, conflicts, and disputes between the Imperium and various Vargr states. They took place most notably in Corridor Sector and Deneb Sector.
Note: multiple historic incidents have been called "the Vargr Campaigns", including the battles from -2107 to -2099 during the Rule of Man when the Second Imperium successfully secured its coreward borders against many Vargr incursions; this article refers to the Vargr Campaigns which famously took place during the first few centuries of the Third Imperium.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
As the Imperium expanded, it initially recruited worlds which were former members of the Second and First Imperium. As its borders reached ever farther out, the Imperial expansion was met by already established Vargr states of varying sizes. The inevitable conflict which resulted as the Imperium worked to secure its territory and the Vargr resisted are collectively called the Vargr Campaigns.
Due to the resource wealth and industrial strength of District 217 (later named the Pretoria Subsector), many of the later battles of the Vargr Campaigns were fought in that district. Waves of Pirates (not all Vargr) were slowly beaten back. By 350, Pretoria had escorts and freighters operating safe trade routes to the growing Districts 218 and Vincennes Subsectors.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
In the lead-up to the campaigns in Deneb Sector, the Imperium gave covert technological support to the Kirissukyoya people, who were suffering Vargr raids.
- The Duchy of Khouth was used as a major base in Corridor Sector's Khouth Subsector throughout the campaigns.
- In 298, the Vargr discovered Overlook which they used for a clandestine supply route into Khouth Subsector until 328, when it was taken by the Imperium.
- Vargr Admiral Fursuelgigz founded the Haven of Fursuelgigz in 313 in District 234 (the later Antra Subsector).
- In the 330s and 340s, many actions took place in District 217.
- In 339, a convoy of colonial transports bound for the Spinward Marches Sector was traveling through Naadi Subsector. Diverted from its original route by military activity elsewhere in Corridor, the convoy jumped into system 328-904 to perform wilderness refueling. At the system's outer gas giant (Petrus) it was ambushed by a large Vargr squadron. The Imperial destroyer Darkmoon was in high guard position, and despite overwhelming odds, was able to hold off the raiders until the transports could finish their fuel skimming and escape. The ship's sacrifice saved 17,245 civilian lives. To honour the action of the destroyer and its crew, the Ministry of Colonization petitioned successfully for the IISS to name system 328-904 "Darkmoon".
- In 347, Tersta (Corridor 0102) was one of the last worlds to be captured by the Imperium at the end of the campaigns.
