A tool is an object used to extend the ability of an individual to modify features of the surrounding environment. While all of the items in Goods can be considered tools, the items listed here are basic and simple tools that can be applied to multiple functions. These functions include cutting and shaping, moving things, guiding and measuring, fastening, and tools that enact other changes.

A 300mm long, chemically fueled torch good for small repair jobs and spot welding. Fed by a one-liter tank of pressurized, flammable gas, the Acetylene Torch can be used for 10-30 minutes continuously, depending on the intensity of the heat produced. In combat, it can only be used at close range and causing serious burns. Refills for the tank cost Cr50 each.

Affas is a silicone analog of hydrocarbon petrochemicals. It is a naturally occurring mixture of various types of hydrosilicones and requires processing to render into useful products. Affas is dark red, purple, or black in color; it is of thick, viscous consistency. The substance is heavier than liquid sulfur. It is estimated that lubricants made from the hydrosilicones will increase the efficiency of high-temperature engines by approximately 12%. It can also be used to create a silicone-based plastic that shows remarkable resistance to heat and acid.
The largest known natural source of Affas is the planet Eshaar (Far Frontiers 1826).

An Airless Spray Gun is designed to apply an even coating of liquid (paint, etc.) without air using a centrifugal pump to spray surfaces about 45 centimeters from the tip. Its fluid tank holds 1.5 liters and can cover a fifty square meter area before needing refilling. The spray gun is powered from standard outlets and has a two-meter cord. Replacement tips are sometimes necessary due to wear from the spray material and cost Cr10 each.

An Axe is a heavy bladed tool used to shape, split and cut wood, harvest timber, and as a weapon. During the TL–1 era the head of the axe is made of metal, usually copper, bronze or iron. The axe handle usually is wood, though for axes designed as weapons, the handle is reinforced or replaced by metal. It is during the TL–1 development era where the design of an axe begins to reflect its intended purpose. There are different axe designs for felling trees, carpentry, and warfare. With the development of firearms at TL–2, the use of the axe as a weapon falls from favor. Other designs include the fire axe for rescue work and an ice axe for climbing.

Biometric Electronic Locks use biometrics to identify specific individuals to allow access. Biometic scanners contain small sensors that recognize a specific body part or item generated by an individual. Specific examples are fingerprints or digit prints, recognizing distinctive markings on a specific digit. Iris scanners recognize the distinctive pattern of colors in the iris of an eye. Retinal scanner identifies the distinctive pattern of blood vessels in the retina of the eye. Face scanners recognize the shape of a face using a camera and scanner. Voice print readers identify an individual by the distinctive tones of their voice, which requires the user to recite a specific short phrase.

A bolt cutter, sometimes called bolt cropper, is a tool used for cutting chains, padlocks, bolts and wire mesh. It typically has long handles and short blades, with compound hinges to maximize leverage and cutting force. A typical bolt cutter cuts material up to 5/8" thick. Because these tools are designed to defeat security measures, they become restricted on high law level worlds.

Combination Locks work by a nested series of notched disks are rotated by a numbered disk to point where a tumbler falls into each notch. These locks depend upon the large number of possible combinations for security. These are also available as padlocks.

This is a small internal combustion power plant (.002Mw) that drives an air compressor. The high-pressure air output can be used to recharge compressed air tanks, or power paint sprayers, sandblasters, and pressure washers. It can recharge an Oxygen Tanks in approximately 15 minutes and can be hooked up to recharge several at once (at a slower rate).

A Cryogenic Pump is an insulated impeller pump designed to handle cryogenic liquids and slurries. The pump is designed for fluid operating temperatures of 4K to 250K. The pump has a standard 3cm hose attachments for insulated hoses used for cryogenic fluid transfer. The pump is self-priming up to 5m, the pump can be operated either by the attached 0.6kW electric motor or by a hand crank in cases of power failure. The pump can move up to 48 liters per minute at full output.

Descended from the Molecular Dissembler, the E-Circuit Module or Eternity circuit module (or ECM) is a specialized molecular fabrication unit which requires administrative access to the ship’s computer. The ECM maps the molecular structure of a single object, and if the object is damaged, can restore the object back to its initial state. The module can map an object of up to 800 dTons and, because of the size and power requirements of the module itself, the minimum size is about 10 dTons or so.
Installation. When installed, it studies the ship’s systems from the ship’s computer, using molecular analysis to record a genetic redundancy circuit for the ship’s configuration. This takes 60 days and the attention of trained technicians during the entire period.
Scan. Periodically scans the ship’s systems for changes in state. New components are added to the overall configu- ration. Restore. When a system is damaged, it uses the delta generated from the genetic circuit to gradually restore it to its original state, or as close as possible, via molecular fabrication.
Restoration time is measured by Quality, which maps to the number of damage levels the module can repair in a 1-ton (or less) item in one day. For example, a 1 ton sensor with a damage severity of 1 can be repaired by a Quality 1 module in 1 day. If the sensor has a damage severity of 2, it could be repaired by a Quality 1 module in 2 days. On the other hand, a 10 ton jump drive with a damage severity of 3 would be repaired by a Quality 1 module in 30 days, or a Quality 2 module in 15 days.
It does not work with organic materials, being limited to less complex molecular structures, but can repair complex machines like computers. There is no limit to the number of times the module can restore the mapped object but does require access to raw materials in the environment to effect the repairs. Fixing damage takes a few days to a month, depending on the level of damage. The system can't distinguish between damage or destruction, and deliberate alterations.

An entrenching tool, E-tool, or trenching tool is a collapsible spade used by military forces for a variety of military purposes. Modern entrenching tools are usually collapsible and made using steel, aluminum, or other light metals.
Entrenching tools, if strongly built, can also be used as ancillary weapons. Some entrenching tools can be even sharpened on one or both sides of the blade to be used as cutting tools or weapons; in fact, when used as such, the tool's sharp, thick edges are strong enough to cut through flesh and bone.

A Fire Wand is a fire-fighting device. It uses a focused electrical field to push, bend and put out flames. The wand creates a field of around 1,000,000 volts per metre, which disconnects flame from the heat and fuel at its base, thus snuffing the fire.
In shape, the fire wand is a rod, around 300mm long, with a moulded handle at one end. The rod is connected to a power pack, via a heavy-duty cable. To use the fire wand, the device is activated and waved towards the flames, with a slashing or waving motion.
Different-sized power-packs are used with fire wands. Shipboard or domestic models use a small belt-mounted pack, around 200mm high, 150mm wide and 100mm thick and weighing 1kg, while the larger models used by professional fire-fighters feature a large backpack-mounted pack, around 600mm high, 250mm wide and 100mm thick and weighing 4kg. The smaller models give 10 minutes of use, larger models give 1 hour of use.

A fire axe or crash axe is specifically designed for rescue work. The head is designed for smashing through any number of material and is backed by a pick. The haft is a non-flammable material and usually over-designed to accept several hundred kilograms of weight.

The General Products GC-2 Machining System is the smallest TL–8 example of a computer-controlled milling machine.
Under computer control is a single robotic arm with access to 50 different tools for cutting, shaping and polishing a single billet of material. This is an industrial capacity machine designed for assembly line, continuous operational production of finished goods.
Depending upon tool use the machine can handle wood or similar hard organics, most forms of solid plastics, and most metals. Maximum billet size is 25cm x 25cm x 25cm. The computer control system has an accuracy of 10μm.
As an option is an expanded tool cabinet, allowing access to 100 or 260 different tool heads. There is a billet handling system, giving the system access to a continuous feed of billets, with a automated removal of the completed work.

This hoist is a battery-powered motor which drives a reel with 25 meters of cable. It has a hook on one side for attachment to a belt or harness and another hook on the opposite side for the cable. A rocker switch in the handle controls direction and an adjustable clutch controls speed; the reel can also freewheel. Power lasts for about one hour before the batteries need replacing. A hand brake can lock the cable in position and a centrifugal brake keeps the cable from unwinding too rapidly

An ice axe or climbing axe is a light weight tool used to assist in climbing. The head is smaller and more pointed, backed by either a hammer head or an awl. This is a small but powerful electric motor attached to an infinitely variable transmission. The Iris valve opener pries open non-functional iris valves or regular doors, either by force or by attaching to emergency crank handles. The time required varies the size and obstinacy of the door in question, but the gearing of the opener can go low enough to eventually bend and tear through almost any barrier. Keypad Electronic Locks usually takes the form of a terminal-like keyboard next to a door. Similar to combination locks a series of numbers or letters must be entered in order to open them. They become so ubiquitous that they can be found on ground cars, domiciles, and throughout a spectrum of consumer goods.

Laser Cutters resemble a bulky sword handle with a round cross guard that functions two ways. The first way is a standard laser torch, burning a hole or slicing through material. The second function is as a laser grinder, utilizing a gravity field to manipulate the laser, grinding into hard surfaces at twice the speed of a laser torch with minimal heat. An internal battery lasts three hours as a torch, forty minutes as a grinder.

A heavy-duty, semi-portable laser used for mining, the laser drill is a tripod-mounted projector much more powerful than a laser rifle. It is also more cumbersome and far less accurate, being intended for work at short ranges. The tripod mount is an accessory: 1 kg, 2 liters, Cr 250.
A power pack - not interchangeable with that used on personal laser weapons - can be hooked to the drill, providing one hour of intermittent use. A cable can be run from either a portable fusion generator or the power plant of a nearby vehicle. This will allow the drill to be used for as long as desired. Although not technically a weapon, many worlds treat it as such and others will expect owners to prove mining intent.

Similar in size and power output to a Laser Rifle, the Laser welder is more ruggedly constructed, but of far less utility as a weapon. The laser welder is a semi-portable unit designed for major repair work. The internal power pack is good for 100 minutes of continuous use at standard output, or about 25 minutes of intense use. After this a recharge is required; or the unit can be hooked by adapter cables to a starship or groundside power source for unlimited use. The high setting is normally used for hull repair and other major work. It can be used as a weapon, but not at greater than short range. The laser welder is 1 meter x .75 meters x .75 meters.

Linear Burning Rope

Linear Burning Rope is an explosive device. Each rope is packaged in 8-meter long coils, with a rope diameter of 3cm; within the vacuum-sealed plastic packs they are further wrapped in a cellophane-like red and yellow-striped covering, which peels off to reveal a bright yellow putty-like substance, akin to plastic explosives. Each package also contains two piezo-electric initiator plugs.
After the roll is removed from the outer packaging, the inner cellophane wrapping must be removed. The putty-like material of the rope is malleable with ease, even in cold temperatures (operating temperature range: 100°K to 285°K). The rope should be molded to the edge of the surface to be burned through and tamped to provide as equilateral a triangular cross-section as possible. Each rope is powerful enough to burn through a standard thickness ship hull.
Two initiators are supplied for times when stress is high: It is not uncommon for an initiator to go 'walkies' and having a second initiator to hand is a measure of insurance against stress-induced forgetfulness. One initiator is sufficient to ignite an entire length of Linear Burning Rope; the initiator is pushed into a convenient place in the rope, much like a plastic explosive detonator plug might be. The red and yellow striped tab is peeled off, to reveal a bright red and yellow pull ring. the ring connects to 1mm thick by 30cm long cable leading to a wind-up detonator within the body of the initiator, which then charges a high-charge capacitor, which on reaching full capacity, discharges after five seconds into the rope, which then ignites.
The rope burns extremely brightly (in a similar way to magnesium) and with extremely high temperature within the material being burned through; surrounding temperatures are high, but not excessively so. It takes about thirty seconds for a standard section of hull metal to be burned through, and the edges of the metal will be exceedingly hot to the touch for about half an hour after burning.
In much the same way as a linear shaped charge works explosively, the Linear Burning Rope works comparatively slowly and non-explosively for use in confined spaces.
The manufacturer of the rope recommends in the literature that an insulating blanket of some kind be affixed to affected surfaces to prevent burn injuries after penetration (they recommend a product they manufacture, as it happens).

Magnetic Electronic Locks use readers recognize the coding imprinted on a magnetized strip. This coding is usually sealed in a plastic card. Other versions have a series of small permanent magnets embedded in a key as the unlocking system.
As an electronic lock, if the encoded strip matches the accepted values, the separate locking mechanism is triggered to allow access. In many cases the reader is connected to a larger computer system to verify the imprinted encoding as correct.

The Match uses an electrical current from the batteries in the unit causes a thermal buildup in the focusing element, using comparatively little energy to create a micro fine point of intense heat. This device is extremely energy efficient.
A match is slightly larger than a standard screwdriver, and of roughly the same shape. It has a blunt, thick handle and a protruding point. When its blunt end is twisted clockwise, its point glows white-hot and is capable of cutting through most materials. The user's hand is protected from the heat by an insulating coating on the device, although a glove should be worn to keep the user from being scorched by whatever material he is cutting. It is capable of 30 seconds total cumulative use before its filament burns out.
Filaments are disposable and are sold in packs of five spikes for Cr300. The handle houses the batteries which must be recharged after 30 seconds of use. The unit costs Cr2,000.
It was originally developed as a cutting tool by research engineers at Ling-Standard Metals and it has seen a variety of uses, most notably (unfortunately) as a burglar's implement. Its size makes it quite handy, as it is portable enough to carry in a pocket, yet powerful enough to burn a hole in the hardest metals. The Parrying Bar is a rod, constructed from ceramic, metal, polymer, or carbon fibre. The bar is 8mm wide and 300-500mm long. The rod is mounted on a knife-like haft and features one, two or three sharp projecting tongues, set like the hilts of a knife, which point upward, towards the tip of the bar. The tongues can catch and parry weapons or hook into flesh and the rod can be used to strike blows or apply joint locks.

The Pilotless Aerial Vehicle (PAV) is a small, remote-controlled aircraft, used for scouting, exploring and mapping.
The PAV is usually portable and folds up into a carrying tube, 1m long, 150mm wide and weighing 1.5kg. The PAV can be run from a hand computer, or with the hand control unit which is supplied with the device. It can be steered to a desired location or it can be programmed to fly in a holding pattern. The PAV carries a payload of 400g. It comes complete with an automated standard camera and a small 'bomb bay', which can carry small objects such as message capsules, but it can also carry other equipment, such as a bioscanner, directional microphone or chemical sniffer.
The PAV, when assembled, has a wingspan of around 900mm and a length of 850mm. It can fly at an altitude of 1,000m and an airspeed of 120kmph. The vehicle can fly 40km from its operator and one charge of its battery will allow for 24 hours of continuous flight. PAV's can be used at atmospheres between 4 (thin atmosphere) and 9 (dense, tainted atmosphere).

A 1250mm long, lightweight version of the laser welder, the Portable laser welder unit is similar in many ways. It does not, however, use an internal power pack; it is designed to be powered from a standard laser rifle backpack power source, a feature that makes it a favored tool, for starship crews loathe to carry a multitude of different pieces of equipment and power sources. Standard power settings keep the welder in operation for 25 minutes; full output uses up power within 5 minutes. It cannot be linked to outside generators. If used in combat treat it as a laser carbine. The weight does not include the weight of a power pack.

The Stik-kit is an adhesive patch, about 10cm by 10cm. One side of the patch is a layer of black ridged plastic, the other is a smooth white layer. The patch is activated by the user flexing the patch, which causes the white side to become extremely sticky, and will adhere to almost any surface. The patch will adhere under most conditions including vacuum, under water and most atmospheres. The adhesive cures in a few seconds of application. The adhesive may be inactivated by the application of a small electric charge, the patch comes with an integral battery. Once deactivated, the stik-kit is discarded.
The active stik-kit can hold about 100kg, the limits of the plastic backing. The flexible plastic patches are used for many different types of quick, semi-permanent repairs.
Stik-kits are sold either individually or in packages of 10.

A Stone Axe is a heavy blade attached to a handle of wood or animal bone by a leather cord or plant fibers. It is not as sharp as a knife or sword, but has a large momentum and significant crushing power. The heaviness of the blade also makes it more durable if used against hard surfaces or as a blocking tool. The heaviness and size of this two-handed tool makes it somewhat unwieldy in combat or in enclosed spaces.

Thermeld comes in 15cm long x 5cm wide x 3 cm deep strips of mildly flexible bright pink putty-like material, wrapped in yellow and black striped cellophane-like material, with a pull-strip on the base to expose a mildly adhesive base. Each strip is further wrapped in a vacuum-sealed transparent wrapping that also contains two piezo-electric initiator plugs.
After removing the strip from the outer packaging, and securing the initiators in a safe place, the bottom peel-off strip is removed, and the strip affixed to the joining surfaces to be welded together.
Two initiators are supplied for times when stress is high: It is not uncommon for an initiator to go 'walkies' and having a second initiator to hand is a measure of insurance against stress-induced forgetfulness. One initiator is sufficient to ignite an entire length of Thermeld strip; the initiator is pushed into a convenient place in the strip, much like a detonator plug might be. The red and yellow striped tab is peeled off, to reveal a bright red and yellow pull ring. the ring connects to 1mm thick by 30cm long cable leading to a wind-up detonator within the body of the initiator, which then charges a high-charge capacitor, which on reaching full capacity, discharges after five seconds into the strip, which then ignites.
Thermeld Strips operate in much the same way that Linear burning ropes do, but welding surfaces together in an emergency, rather than cutting them. Thermeld is not a substitute for conventional welding equipment but is a handy emergency substitute.
The rope burns extremely brightly (in a similar way to magnesium) and with extremely high temperature within the material being burned through; surrounding temperatures are high, but not excessively so. It takes about ten seconds for a weld to be conducted, and the welded surfaces will be exceedingly hot to the touch for about half an hour after burning.

Tumbler Locks work by moving small metal or plastic pins into sleeves measured to precise lengths. When the tumblers are moved the proper distances by a properly shaped piece of metal, the latch is free to move. Two keys generally come with each lock; duplicates can be made for a few credits. Tumbler locks can be keyed to work for several different keys, allowing some keys to open a series of locks, others only one. Padlocks (small, readily portable versions of the tumbler lock) appear at TL–5.

The waterknife is a military application of a TL–7 industrial technology. An extremely high-pressure stream of abrasive-loaded water is pumped through a very small diamond nozzle, and the resulting pinpoint jet is capable of cutting through any material up to diamond hardness. As the possibility of boarding actions on starships became a reality, the waterknife became the melee weapon of choice for selective disabling of systems and opponents without undue damage to the boarded ship in general. Normal application would be a small high-pressure tank on the back, with armored hose leading to a nozzle on top of one wrist. This could be used as a cutting tool, or a melee weapon capable of cutting through virtually any space suit without too much effort. It is "fired" with a hand-mounted trigger, tied either to a hand motion or by nerve impulses fed through a port on the suit.
A full pressure charge, 4 liters of treated water, will last for one minute of continuous use. They can bore a deep hole like a drill bit, to provide a small access hole for an observation device, introduction of incapacitating agents, and so on. As a melee weapon, its cutting ability varies widely with the actual range when the jet intersects something.
