A Timer Club is a cryogenics service corporation providing cryogenic sleep services.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The idea behind the club is as old as the cold sleep technology; take a group of people and pass several decades or centuries, then awaken in a new world. The original clubs were formed by members suffering from various terminal illnesses beyond the ability of medical treatments at the time. The clubs become more prevalent when either economic or political events make people nervous about the future.

Frequently these groups would be started by a small group of wealthy individuals wishing to evade current events. Depending upon the notoriety of the group, the publicity would attract others wanting to make the same time jump. To serve these customers new corporations would form to set up and monitor the cold sleep berths.

Unfortunately for many of these time travelers a combination of events would either cut their leap short or result in their deaths. For many of the medical cases, their illnesses prevented them from being revived successfully. In other cases the economic situations that prompted the formation of the club also drove the monitoring service to failure as well.

Practice Specifics[edit]

"Timers" are well-to-do individuals with few personal attachments who may enter a low berth for no more reason than to travel into the future. Instead of doing so alone, most elect to buy into a club for companionship and security. These "timer clubs" can be found in both Imperial and Solomani space.

The timers usually emerge at regular 10, 25, or 50-year intervals, although there are rare individuals who will take a longer view, emerging perhaps five times in a millennium. Synchronised this way, they have others with which to share their discoveries in new eras. They mingle with the "ephemerals", enjoying the fruit of their investments and their celebrity status as they tour. Then, after a time, they trickle back to their club facilities - usually situated in remote locations - and resume their sleep."

They can be in there for centuries.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

One of the more famous timer clubs was the Timer Club of Terra, which started before first contact with the Vilani (cold sleep technology having been developed and used for STL colonization of various worlds, including Prometheus). The last of the original members died at some point during the Long Night.

During the Rebellion, the number of Timer clubs expanded dramatically. A great many of these sleepers were killed by the failure of their equipment caused by lack of maintenance, collateral damage from violence associated with the Collapse, or a Virus invasion of the control systems. A number of others had neural comms or other devices forcibly implanted by Virus, and were then awakened to be slaves. In the Reformation Coalition the few survivors are know as remnants.
