Vargr States in Deneb Sector pre-420[edit]

Million Subsector[edit]

Looking at the dot-maps provided in Mongoose's Deneb Sector book, there were a series of Vargr states in Million sector between 100 and 420...none named. I was looking to update the subsector history.

  • 100: Unekh+Talon+Akkip+Fel+Ikhaba+Oluk Dzas+Aerfor
  • 210: (a) Unekh+Talon+Fosfog and (b) Fel+Nurara+Hammand+Arelshanu+Oluk Dzas+Aerfor
  • 330: Fosfog+495-524+Metare
  • 420: Fosfog+495-524+Metare+Fel

There seem to be raids but no stable multi-world states in the civil war period. There is then a long hiatus until Augurgh forms his alliance sometime in the late 1090's at the earliest until its end in 1143.

How does the Wiki Editorial Team suggest that this be described? Pick a random Aekhu name for the 1st entity; split it into two - one getting a new name for the 2nd; with the Fosfog part struggling on (new name now Talon has gone?) for the 330-420 periods?

That sounds reasonable. And, thank you for choosing to use Aekhu. If you need a generator, mine can generate Aekhu word-forms. http://traveller5.net/tools/vilanitools.html

I've set up 3 states: Kloellnugdhungkidztse, Sandherroerghdoe Kaefoulto, and Ksekgizoksdhaerzluenoe. Can you please review these and confirm these don't appear to contradict existing history...I'll then update the histories of the individual worlds to match. Other Subsectors, Year 0[edit]

Per the Wiki Atsak Federation entry there are 5 worlds listed. Per the dot map, (and taking it literally!) Atsah and Atadl are shown as outside the federation in year 0, but Wal-ta-ka, Doho, Kasmar and Berora are shown as inside. If one assumes a line error for the dot map, then that would bring in Atsah and Og Bere. Anyy suggestions to reconcile these discrepancies?

There are 3 other year zero states outside Million (detailed above). One is the Lidash League. The Wiki shows Deneb, Eshamlii, Usani and (unexpectedly) Regina which wasn't settled at the time and is in the wrong sector. The fourth world looks (from the map - which is suitably vague) as if it were Amshal. Is that a good assumption?

The other two are, by implication from the text Vargr empires - They can't be Human as the Lidash League is the only Human empire. The Vilani & Vargr dot map indicates that these would be Aekhu colonies. The rimward of the two is stable and extant in 100 also. The coreward one has collapsed by 100 and been replaced by two new entities at the edges of its old location. I'd propose that the stable one would be vagu ruggre, the unstable one durrngergoudharrrae succeeded by dzaezggoknoguekuztaekh and vaethkagdzaegsothzouk. durrngergoudharrrae and vaethkagdzaegsothzouk sort of stumble along until the Vargr Campaigns when they get absorbed by the Imperium. n.b. I think the writers of Dekha's entry in the wiki weren't aware of the Vargr history...I'll need to work around that somehow.

Finally, there are 9 worlds shown as non-Imperial trade-route hubs. Would it be a valid assumption to write these up as Imperial Client States until finally absorbed?

BackworldTraveller (talk) 08:33, 15 May 2020 (EDT)

Sorry about the looooong pause there.
* Yes, I see that the Dekha entry lacks knowledge of Imperial pre-history.
* Vargr polities tend to be unstable, constantly shifting confederations. Thus what looks like a line error might be the passage of time?
* Yeah, those trade hubs could be considered client states.

Lost Diaries #1 - Lost in the Ziru Sirka

by Rob Eaglestone

This is a lightly edited version of a story that was originally posted to the pre-magazine Freelance Traveller website in 2002, and reprinted in the October 2014 issue.

[Editor’s Note: The origin of this diary excerpt is unknown. The original was written in an archaic form of High Vilani. There are indications that it may have been found on a world that was on the periphery of the Ziru Sirka, hence the title.]

… I buried Khaashuur yesterday. We were attacked by nomads who had no conscience at all, leaving us with our clothes and some new bruises. Khaashuur suffered internal injuries and was coughing up blood not long after. I still cannot use a cutlass. Now I wish I had learned a long time ago.

If only the calendar here made sense. Everything is local. Money is local. Time is local.

Everything is primitive. Money is disorganized and silly, with strange denomination ratios… 3 to 1, then 5 to 1 or 6 to 1 or even (Sharshurshid protect us!) 7 to 1.

With a functioning memclip and patience we were able to learn these people’s simple language. They certainly sound strange, with some noises I’ve never heard before. Kind of nasal, like the yokels in Ilelish, liberally peppered with yowls and coughs.

Medicine is horribly primitive. I don’t want to talk about it. Though I must say their herblore is of an extremely high quality—they can extract beneficial chemicals from the local flora without all our expensive and tedious processing techniques.

Let’s just say it, shall we? I’m doomed to die on this miserable world, so far from all I know, and too close to all these smelly people. Actually, they don’t smell anymore, which means I must smell like them now.

Though, of course, they must have technology somewhere on this world. The atmosphere is pleasant, if a bit dry, and people actually eat most of the smaller vegetation here! In fact, they even eat the animals, which proves that there must have been genetic engineering going on at one time. That, or someone transplanted most of the edibles in the galaxy and planted a garden-quality reserve world, perhaps for hunting? My goal is to find the emergency starport that must be on this world.

On the schedule for these next couple days is the end of a great feast. The religious caste are playing tug-of-war or something with the warrior caste over a trouble-maker who claims to be the king. He’s obviously an artisan, but I heard he says the most extraordinary things, inciting riots and disturbing the peace. And now this bit about being the king. I mean, if he went around saying he was the Emperor we’d put him away! They take things like that very gravely down here. I’ll stick around and see what happens. …
