History & Background (Dossier)

• Star's End is divided by the Lesser Rift into two separate regions that do not typically interact.
• The coreward side of the rift within the sector is a somewhat unremarkable corner of the Lorean Hegemony, which is part of the larger Julian Protectorate. This region was generally unsettled except by a few Julian stragglers and ex-patriots until the Lorean Hegemony expanded into the area in the late 800s Imperial Calendar. Finding little beside a truculent artifact of the Ancients in the area, the Loreans settled unopposed. Under the Loreans, this part of the sector became part of the Julian Protectorate in the 900s.
• The rimward edge of the sector, on the other hand, had been settled thousands of years earlier. Already home to a thin community of Ziru Sirka ex-patriots and political exiles following the Consolidation Wars, the region, including parts of Gateway Sector further rimward, was tentatively explored by a far-reaching branch of the K'kree in the late -3000s. Though the exact events are not known outside of K'kree archives (and possibly not even there), several worlds were settled by K'kree in the centuries afterwards. Whether from population growth or additional ships from the Two Thousand Worlds, the number of worlds settled by the K'kree steadily grew over time. A surge around -2000, shortly after the Hiver-K'kree War, would lead the somewhat scattered K'kree worlds here to unify, annex promising systems further spinward and adopt a defensive stance with new fleet construction. Though they considered themselves part of the Two Thousand Worlds, these K'kree also understood that the stars between them and Kirur were not always safe. Their claims to systems in Star's End would peak at roughly 40 systems.
• The K'kree, confident in their technological and ideological superiority, reigned unopposed until early in the Third Imperium era. As human populations increased in Gateway Sector, piracy and other activities increased, including settlement at a rapid pace. Several such states rose near the K'kree. One in particular was too close, but suffered a bloody internal revolution before the K'kree could decide what to do about them. To their horror, the revolution became a drive to expand, and roughly a quarter of the systems proactively claimed by the K'kree were settled by the new and aggressive Hochiken People's Assembly. Not truly prepared for war, the Star's End K'kree pragmatically decided that if they hadn't gotten around to using those worlds in two thousand years, they probably didn't need them. They drew the line there, however, letting the Hochiken leadership know in clear terms that there would be no further real estate transfers. That state of affairs has held ever since, though the ideology of the Hochiken has led to some tense moments.
• Observers who are familiar with the K'kree admit to being puzzled by this chain of events, as it is notably atypical of the K'kree to cede territory or tolerate dangerous neighbors.
