Space: 1889 was a game with a Victorian science fiction theme also published by GDW.

  • It was a game often featured in Challenge magazine articles.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

In Traveller terms, it is set in a late TL-3 environment with early superscience space travel, non-current scientific concepts (aether, aether ships, liftwood, etc.), and colonial Imperial factions... as well as native Martian forces.

Its physics aren't consistent with contemporary understandings of the universe. In that sense, it's a science fantasy setting.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The game received quite a following in the day and converted well to miniatures, either naval battles at about 1:3,000 scale or small unit surface combat skirmishes typically in 28mm.

Numerous follow on games and settings were inspired by it... The Victorian Science Fiction (VSF) gaming community was enriched by Space: 1889.
