Sarudis is a low-population vacuum world, with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts in population size, warranting hazardous environment precautions.

  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Sarudis Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data[edit]

Manjazar-Sarudis System[edit]

The primary is Manjazar, a swollen red bright giant star. It has a luminosity of 6180 Sols, a mass of 15.2 Sols, and a diameter of 726.3 million km – the corona of the star extends to 2.43 AU, within orbital position (V). The inner system consists of (VI) a dense stony planetoid belt, (VII) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (VIII) an insidious atmosphere bigworld, (IX) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (X) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, and (XI) Sarudis, designated the mainworld. None of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data[edit]

(XI) Sarudis[edit]

(XI) Sarudis is designated the mainworld. It orbits Manjazar at a mean distance of 81.4 AU (12.2 billion km), within the H– region of the inner system. It has an orbital period of 188 years 136 days and a rotation period of 93 hours. The axial tilt is 16 degrees. Sarudis has a diameter of 4,517 km, a density of 4.27 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.28 G. The world is geologically inert. Its atmosphere is rated as Vacuum. The world has no hydrosphere. Mean surface temperature: 173°C.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

Total surface area: 64 million km².

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Manjazar-Sarudis System[edit]

No native life is known to exist within the system.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

All of the life in the cavern villages has been imported at one time or another. Some of these life forms were drawn from several different ecologies from distance life bearing worlds. Almost all of these species have experienced higher than natural rates of mutation and genetic manipulation most frequently blamed on terraforming efforts of this sterile planetary body. Interfertility issues between wildly different organisms seems to be one of the major goals to increase fecundity. Detoxifying organisms based on chemosynthetic producers was a secondary design mandate. Current technology on world largely ignores the reasons for why these organisms are they way they are and confines itself to deal with the aftermath of what chaos has been wrought. Solomani species were eventually added to the genetic stew with the arrival of colonial humans. Most of these species can self-fertilize. All individuals start as “males” and then transform into “females.” However, they can switch back and forth several times. They can form swarms dangerous fertilized larvae which are very aggressive and are armed with a smooth stinger. This allows repeated use, cytotoxic metallic based venoms persist. Packets of larvae are released periodically after quiescent parents encyst and complete brooding.

Early refugee human arrivals found complex caves and alien tombs which had been sealed for thousands of years. Terrestrial scorpions, snails, spiders, wood lice, leeches, blind fish and centipedes were drawn out of the Terran's genetic lexicon by the Hoppers and spun up. Crystal caverns with primitive stone altars commemorate the great founding. The human population ballooned at first, which lead to the formation of warring tunnel cities, each equipped with specially bred war beasts. Vicious battles and endless wars of vendetta were fought in near total darkness. Congenital blindness became a very common mutation. Echolocation genetic splicing modifications were introduced to offset this. Some genetically enhanced refugees even formed beautifully sculptured cliff cities, nearer to the desolate surface. They sought refuge for the war weary or genetically dispossessed. The Battle of Keto Suma turned out to be the final battle of the War for Crowns. Exhausted and depleted, wracked by famine and disease, the surviving Noble Houses signed the concordant articles and formed a unified government which spread the rule between surviving clans which were instructed to specialize on a single vital industry necessary for collective survival. This way no one faction could afford to wipe out another clan because the loss of any single group would condemn the rest to death. Knowledge and education became very closely guarded secrets and guilds grew up to prevent anyone learning the secrets of other clans' areas of expertise. The parochial approach fossilized knowledge and prevented much innovation. Rote memorization tended to discourage most of the brightest free thinkers.

Eramus the Wise, a respected hero following the Assault on Rossak Prime, was approached by many to use his personal charisma and loyal bodyguards to seize control. He gave a famous speech which modern school children are still required to learn. He explained to the battered nihilists left clinging to life on this desolate rock that they needed to unite to survive and bring forth a better future. Heady, inspirational tripe, it worked and he was proclaimed a hero and evolved into a local legend. In his honor, large herds of selectively breed and genetically altered, slow moving Deep Spawn were created. These are 36,000kg grazers that wander between all of the clans' tunnels now. Their thick integument is a complex symbiotic ecosystem. The dense layers of organic granular platelets are seen as symbolic of the symbiosis that holds this planets' civil society together. They provide tunneling abilities, filter and purify water and can be groomed to remove edible symbiotes. These spawn are powerful cultural images to the current civilization.

Generations later, modern Sarudan natives detest violence, and abhor conflict. The culturally pure population never fully recovered from the wars. Infant mortality rates remain poor despite modern medical technology. Infertility is a common problem. The survivors are devout pacificists and proclaim neutrality in matters of interstellar politics. The uniformed law guides travel unarmed between all levels of society, welcomed by all. They are selected as mental health councilors and settle disputes with de-escalation and talents in conflict resolution and compromise. One must always listen first to find the way is an oft heard expression. Retired law guides are highly sought after on neighboring worlds as impartial mediators between individuals and organizations who find themselves embroiled in contested issues. The chief arbiter is selected from among these guides by vote and resides in a modest stone vault manor attended by a single butler.

World starport[edit]

Sarudis has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level[edit]

Sarudis possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
    • Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
    • Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
    • Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
    • FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.

World government[edit]

Sarudis is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.
