Mudmouth (Creature) Synopsis[edit]
The Mudmouth is a huge, fibrous creature, like an upside down Jellyfish.
Mudmouth (Creature) Physiology & Ecology[edit]
Its body is of a tough, woody material with a sac or bowl-shaped main body and 12 tentacles at the mouth. Its tentacles are long, tough, and strong, with a very tough, rock-like tip, used for burrowing.
Mudmouth Pit Trap[edit]
A Mudmouth lives in a great pit, with its mouth upward and its tentacles out. Its tentacles have leafy sensory organs on the ends so the tentacles resemble (slightly) a circle of palm-like trees. Its stomach cavity is full of digestive fluid; a watery, slightly corrosive material. At the top is a brownish dirt-like corrosive.
The appearance above ground is that of a clearing between a dozen or so trees. When the Mudmouth detects something on the clearing above, it expands its body, sucking the digestive juice layer and its victim inside. The mouth closes over the entire mess, and the combination of digestive juices quickly kill and digest the victim. The complete digestion process usually takes between two and four hours, after which the Mudmouth resets the trap.
Mudmouth (Creature) Life Cycle & Reproduction[edit]
Reproduction is Mudmouth is sexual — each is hermaphroditic, with male and female organs in the tentacles.
The male organs release spores into the wind. These spores are caught by other Mudmouths to fertilize eggs.
These eggs are release in the late Autumn, encased in a light shell. The young then hatch and burrow into the soil.
