Khaem has a complete lack of both an atmosphere and any surface water. The system has a population between 10 million and a billion sophonts, with a self-supporting industrial base. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Arnakhish Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Khaem, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight and the fiefdom of a marquis. Both are members of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. During the Long Night this world was named Ariir Giind.

Astrography and planetology[edit]

Khaem is located on the Vilani Main.

Point of Interest: Mysterious Petroglyphs[edit]

Originally a small time mining outpost, its rise to fame throughout the Imperial core comes from the discovery of huge rock carvings. These carvings extend for thousands of square kilometers of the northern dust plains. The carvings rival those found on Wardn (Spinward Marches 1727). The lines vary in width from about 1 meter to 20 meters and form a complex series of linked designs, mostly geometric in nature. Significant areas lack any coherent patterns, and many have an unfinished look.

The engravings were stumbled upon in 794, some two hundred years after the founding of the original base when prospectors cleared some of the thick dust layers to start test drilling a promising mineral vein. The engravings have proven to be a richer source of income for the world as tourists flock to the world in millions. The scale of the engravings means the best way to view them is through a low-orbit flyby.

So far no-one has come up with a convincing hypothesis to explain their existence: expressionist art on a truly massive scale or part of some more constructive purpose. Even the age of the engravings are open to much argument though most researchers agree they are at least 25,000 years old.

Point of Interest: Geological Anomaly[edit]

The world has another anomaly, of more interest to planetary geologists and seismologists. The outer crust of the planet is of unusual complexity and density. This has thwarted even the most advanced densitometers, requiring the use of test bores and explosives to reach the substrata. Little is known about the interior workings of the planet. The crust has numerous soft spots, circular regions of low density rock scattered around the planets surface, many in the engraved regions.

History and background[edit]

The majority of the population of this small vacuum world originate in the neighboring Iiradu Subsector.
