Numbis Sector is a crossroads zone caught in-between three interstellar forces, the Hive Federation, the Two Thousand Worlds, and several independent Human colonization waves from spinward localities.

Toponyms: 1105[edit]

This sector has been known by different names to different groups over its existence including the following:

Numbis Sector Names
Culture Toponym Polity
Third Imperium Galiin Third Imperium
Aslan Galiin Aslan Hierate
Droyne Unknown Droyne Oytrip Yatroy
Hiver Numbis Hive Federation
K'kree 'Kaa G!'kul Two Thousand Worlds
Solomani 'Kaa G!'kul Solomani Confederation
Vargr Galiin Vargr Extents
Vilani Galiin Third Imperium
Zhodani Galiin Zhodani Consulate
  • This sector was named Galiin Sector in the First Imperium, and is still referred to as such on some Imperial charts.
  • The Two Thousand Worlds named this the Kaa G!'kul Sector, which is reflected on a larger number of charts.
  • Hive Federation names this sector the Numbis Sector. As the Hivers typically do not name regions themselves but defer to local naming, it is speculated that the name comes from a mis-translation of "Nimbus", a name that may have been applied to the sector by the Solomani settlers of the Corona Regnum.
  • The Solomani of the Rule of Man do not appear to have coined a name for the sector, using the Vilani name on charts until a decision was made to use the name adopted by the K'kree, likely for diplomatic reasons.

Linguistic Topography: 1105[edit]

The following languages are among the most commonly used within this astrographic region:

History & Background[edit]

A low-key chaotic region often overlooked, Kaa G!kul or Numbis -- a local might name it differently depending on who they were talking to and with what intent -- never really coalesced, politically. When the Hiver-K'kree War came to an end, and the Hive Federation was consolidating itself in the rimward parts of the sector, a fair few worlds had no interest in joining, and formed part of the Corona Regnum, a loose collection of worlds that only assert a unity when necessary to defend their interests and independence. To coreward, Human efforts to establish economic ties with the K'kree came to little, and the corporate powers flowing through the Gateway region often wound up clustering around new resources jealously and a little haphazardly, forced to reinvent themselves in the absence of expected trade from the "Centaurs". Nations like the Yeskoth Corporate and United Pact wound up jostling for position along the unwelcoming spinward border of the Two Thousand Worlds. To rimward-trailing in the sector, K'kree borders press uncomfortably against Hiver allies like the Krotan and the Lithkind, and isolated K'kree naval outposts creep along the Hive Federation-Corona Regnum border, ostensibly for the security of distant assets like the garden world K'bam! (1331) or Devi in Crucis Margin Sector. A K'kree client state is also established on the far side of the United Pact, giving more excuse for K'kree ships to cross space in which they're not wanted. If there's any "incidents", then there are plenty of disposable native Mazjaru to throw at people.

Major Historical Events Timeline: 1116[edit]

These are some of the more important historical events that have affected this sector:

  • Circa -2130: The worlds that will become the Corona Regnum are settled as a Terran cultural region. These colonies make contact with local Minor Races and, in time, the Hivers.
  • -2102: The Lithkind, native to neighbouring Gzirr!k'l Sector, become aware that their colony at Yezial (in Numbis) has been lost.
  • -2080: A Lithkind follow-up expedition to Yezial discovers the wrecked colony scarred by beam-weapon fire, and a derelict scout ship of strange (K'kree) design.
  • -2038: Several Hiver-inhabited worlds in Numbis are occupied by the K'kree, who begin exterminating local carnivore populations.
  • -2029 to -2013: The Hiver-K'kree War threatens the Hiver community.
    • Reactions among the Terran colonies are mixed.
    • -2023 to -2018: As a consequence of organizing defence during the war, the modern Hive Federation is codified.
    • Technological aid to nations like the Krotan Primacy and the Sha Elden Lith Kindriu results in a "hardening" of the K'kree-Hiver border.
    • The K'kree surrender and withdrawal is claimed to be the result of Hiver psychohistorical manipulation. Ithklur history, in the form of the Dikrah Kiradgi, records a different version of events.
  • (-1776 to 0): The Long Night.
  • Circa -1550: A reportedly zealous response to K'kree probes leads to the first declared Corona Regnum, as the systems of the Corona unite to stand against the larger threat.
    • The Regnum lasts roughly two centuries before collapsing in on itself.
    • The Gold Union forms at some unknown point on the Numbis-Crucis Margin border. It will in time apparently become the Amalgamation Union.
  • -740: New Human states in Numbis began to expand and conquer, causing the Corona Regnum to reform as a defensive act.
  • -710: Having repulsed attempts on its territory, the Corona Regnum begins conquering systems outside of the traditional Corona.
  • -510: The second Regnum collapses, again under its own weight.
  • The Year 0: Far to spinward, the Third Imperium is founded.
  • 224: A brief Third Corona Regnum is declared, but doesn't survive the death in fleet battle of its founder eight years later.
  • 300-420: The Imperial First Survey.
    • Some ships of the Survey go missing in the region. Fragmentary reports suggest that the Amalgamation ("Gold") Union is destabilizing.
  • 410: To aid in administration of the Young Worlds, the Hive Federation capital is moved to Glea.
  • 890: Yeskoth Corporate begins formation around Edienta and Coreeedo.
  • 995 to 1065: The Imperial Second Survey.
    • There is no sign of the Amalgamation Union, aside from common architectural themes in old capital buildings and monuments.
  • 1114: A series of poorly timed Hiver and K’kree "diplomatic overtures" to worlds in the Corona cause a ripple effect of panic, resolve, and reunification.

Trade Routes (Economic Astrography)[edit]

The following astrographic features and trade routes can be found within this area:

Mains, Branches & Arms[edit]

The sector is dominated by a sprawling Main which is rooted in the Two Thousand Worlds and extends branches to spinward into the nearby client states and non-aligned systems. The entire Main is not named in common usage, though many of the branches are named locally. The K'kree view the Main as a liability, as it provides many easy paths into their space, while the nearby states largely ignore the K'kree end of the Main, as it is not readily available at best, and actively hostile at worst.
