Hrunting has a short-sleeve breathable atmosphere. The system has a population between ten million and 100 million sophonts. It is a member of Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Sword Worlds. This world supports a Sword Worlds Military Base and the system supports a Sword Worlds Naval Base.

Astrography & Planetology[edit]

Hrunting is a member of the Spinward Main.

Hrunting has a cold climate and a standard oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere. Hrunting orbits its primary, Beowulf, in a 3:2 orbital resonance at a distance of 0.10 AU.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

Not long before the first settlers came to Sword Worlder space, one of the rare "superflares" from Beowulf evaporated much of the planet's oceans. The remaining water in the air condensed over the next century into substantial rainstorms that leached minerals out of Hrunting's soils. These were deposited in huge, salty, chemical-encrusted flats surrounding the shrunken oceans.

Hrunting's capital and starport are at Brennistein, located on the coast of the Kina Sea.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Multicellular life on Hrunting is relatively new, having arisen about 100 million years ago. Photosynthesizing life hasn't yet evolved to live on land, so most of Hrunting's biosphere is in the oceans.

Hrunting's most prominent native life form are the Stone Trees, a diverse mollusc-like order of animals that have recently adapted to invade the land.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Hrunting's location on the Darrian border makes it a natural staging area for expeditions into the Darrian Subsector, but also makes it vulnerable to espionage -- which is why the Hrunting system has regular military patrols. Hrunting contains a military base designed to serve as a central command for coalition fleets. The base was built to accommodate a much larger staff and many more vessels than are normally stationed there.

Hrunting, like many of the worlds in the Sword Worlds subsector, is named for a sword -- in this case, a weapon given to Beowulf by Unferth in the ancient Old English epic poem Beowulf. Beowulf used it in battle against Grendel's Mother.

Urbanization[edit]

Hrunting has few dozen cities, all with populations of less than 500,000. These act as depots for the hinterlands, seaports through which bulk agricultural goods, ores, and industrial chemicals can be shipped. Most people live in the rural regions around the cities. The hinterlands have little in the way of infrastructure.

Economy[edit]

The Luitegard Befordran corporation has a monopoly on heavy transport. Outlying farms and mines have rough landing areas where the transports can land, pick up cargo, and move it to the nearest city.
