Granicus is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.

  • In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a member of the Federation of Heron in the Glowing Subsector of Glimmerdrift Reaches Sector.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

It is a non-industrial world located in the Glowing Subsector of the Glimmerdrift Reaches Sector.

System Data[edit]

The Federation of Heron maintains a small naval contingent in the system. The Federation's physical base of operations is on the planet Flit, its staff of 500 being mostly civilian bureaucrats. All information concerning Granicus' relationship to the Federation passes through here. The governor's residence is officially on Flit as well.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

No information yet available.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Granicus has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Long-term natives have somewhat adapted to these conditions.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

The majority of the planet’s population live on Laglund, which is the site of the planet’s largest city, Herm. Laglund straddles the equator, stretching 3,000 miles east to west. It features four mountain ranges, an enormous desert, rain forests, and plains broken with marsh and swampland.

  • Naransa, a nation stretching along the southwestern shores of Heart Gulf, holds about one-third of Laglund’s population.

Digirien and Nolachu are the north and south polar continents. Parts of each extend into the temperate zones. Digirien boasts impressive mountain ranges and is sparsely populated. Nolachu is also mostly uninhabited.

  • A handful of fringe groups have established settlements there over the past 500 years, each of which ultimately failed.

Shastag is the landmass that contains the largest desert on the planet, covering most of its northern interior. Shastag has the bulk of the planet’s radioactive metals, but even these are not enough to meet the local demand.

Khantaf stretches from the narrow isthmus that connects it to Digirien. It roughly follows the boundaries of two tectonic plates that are grinding into one another; a single chain of mountains runs like a spine up its centre.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The so-called "Pirate's Paradise," its corrupt, faction-ridden government and out-of-the-way location make it the perfect base of operations for pirate cartels, whose criminal enterprises reach into Imperial space.

  • The cartels are particularly blatant, sometimes operating in multi-ship bands to launch a planetary raid or to trap a particularly big prize.

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

Granicus has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)[edit]

A full 97% of the people are of “native” stock -- descendants of Solomani and Vilani settlers. The designations “Solomani” and “Vilani” have lost their meaning for native Granicans due to intermarriage.

World Government (G)[edit]

Granicus is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

World Law Level (L)[edit]

No information yet available.

World Technology Level (TL)[edit]

Granicus possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Timeline[edit]

  • In 715 a group of Vilani displaced by the Solomani Autonomous Region were stranded on Granicus when their jump drive failed. In 718 the settlers forged a government called the Protectorate over most of the world's city-states. The high-tech Vilani immigrants to Granicus came to dominate the city-state of Merik. This government in turn began to assimilate nearby native city-states.
  • By 800 civil wars on Granicus finally brought an end to the Protectorate, and in 1000 the various nations on Granicus agreed to accept overall rule by the Federation of Heron in exchange for local autonomy.
  • By 1050 Pirate elements had discovered the advantages that Granicus offers. In 1098 the Fallani Syndicate began operations out of Duval, triggering a subtle war between the Syndicate and the Khimirika League.
