Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are a long domesticated carnivore/chasers native to Terra (Solomani Rim 1827). The species familiaris has been cataloged via DNA analysis to be about 100,000 years old and historical evidence shows they were first domesticated between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago.

Physiology & Ecology[edit]

Original dog color is a solid light brown color. The intensive genetic engineering has added colors of black, white, and various shades of grey in between, and various shades of brown from light to dark. The coloration patterns include a countershading (dark color on the back, lighter on the belly), spots, random splotches, and (rarely) stripes. Basic fur ranges from a thin almost non-existent covering to a thick coat suitable for arctic survival.

Due to their aggressive breeding, dogs still come in four different sizes:

  • Small – about 10kg and 90cm long
  • Medium – about 20kg and 120cm long
  • Large – about 40kg and 150cm long
  • Very Large – about 80kg and 190cm long

Life Cycle & Reproduction[edit]

Breeding programs ultimately produced dogs sized from 0.1kg to over 150.0kg and in more than two-hundred different breeds. It is one of the most diverse single species in known space.

Diet & Trophics[edit]

Homeothermic, carnivore chasers, these heterotrophic consumers have evolved from obligate carnivores to semi-omnivores through their long association with humanity. Argument persists if the relationship is mutualistic or commensal.

History & Background[edit]

The Ancients definitely took Dogs away from their home world. Some worlds on which Human Minor Races are found also had local breeds of dog present.

It should be noted that while Vargr derive much of their DNA from Terran Dogs, the genetic engineering applied - and subsequent evolution - mean that they cannot be scientifically classed as the same family, let alone species.

The first Dog taken into space by the Solomani was a creature named Laika. Since it died, there is now an aversion amongst the Solomani to naming their ships "Laika".

In the -3000s the pre-spaceflight Terrans began to genetically engineer dogs through simple breeding practices. The purpose was to create more specialized versions of the dog for specific needs. These included hunting various beasts, guard and tracking duties, herding various herbivores, as drovers, and companion animals.

During the Interstellar Wars period, and as the Terran Diaspora took place, dogs were brought along as companions. The dogs fared poorly in the artificial environments aboard starships and stations. On colony worlds they adapted very well, and served many useful roles in most surface colonies.

Dogs continue to serve as both working animals and as companions. They are found on almost every world in the Solomani sphere, and on many worlds beyond.

TAS Advisory[edit]

These animals are found most places Solomani are. Customs and quarantine should be consulted in advance when traveling with this species as regulations can vary on certain planets.
