The star Castor (otherwise known as Alpha Geminorum) is a sextenary star system which (along with the star Pollux) represent the two "twins" comprising the Terran-sky constellation of Gemini.
Description[edit]
The Castor star system is a sextuple system of stars comprised of three separate binary pairs.
- Castor A is comprised of a blue-white early subgiant star (Castor Aa) orbited by a pinkish-orange "red dwarf" main sequence star (Castor Ab). They orbit each other with a period of 9.213 days and an orbital eccentricity of e=0.5.
- Castor B is comprised of a blue-white early subgiant star (Castor Ba) orbited by a pinkish-orange "red dwarf" main sequence star (Castor Bb). They orbit each other with a period of 2.93 days.
- Castor C (otherwise known as the BY Draconis variable type star YY Gemninorum) orbits the Castor A/B pair with a period of about 14000 years. It is comprised of two nearly identical pinkish-orange "red dwarf" main sequence stars (Castor Ca and Castor Cb) that orbit each other once every 0.814 days.
The Castor star system lies approximately 15.6pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimward/Rimspinward direction from Terra at bearing 187.4o Galactic Longitude and +22.5o North Galactic Latitude.
History[edit]
Castor is the primary star of the beltworld Castor/Gemini (Solomani Rim 2339).
