The Burugdi of Bur'vr'di'klr (Theta Borealis 2112) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a non-humanoid appearance and technologically advanced sophonts.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Burugdi are a nonhuman race originating on Bur'vr'di'klr (Theta Borealis 2212). They are viewed as expansionist, and driven to obtain worlds for a rapidly growing population. They been engaged in a long term war with their neighbours.

Physical sophontology[edit]

The fully-grown 'adult' Burugdi is two metres long, an amorphous creature weighing in at about 175 kg. They have eight limb-like appendages; the forward pair is manipulatory, the rear three pairs have regressed into little more than club-like limbs barely capable of lifting and moving the Burugdi body. The 'adults' have been described as 'resembling large, bloated prostrate fowls'.

Life Cycle and reproduction[edit]

Burugdi have four sexes - all of who appear to be identical to other races - and all four are required for sexual reproduction. They are also capable of asexual reproduction, which results in a series of genetically 'identical' clones (genetically identical to the blood parent, although they are phenotypically distinct) known as Il'Burugdi.

Il'Burugdi are smaller and more physically active than 'adults'. They have an upright, bipedal stance and are extremely dexterous in comparison. They are considered only semi-intelligent and most of their actions appear to be controlled psionically by their blood parent. Il'Burugdi are sterile and have lifespans of only 10 to 15 years (in comparison with the 90 - 120 years enjoyed by an 'adult'). The 'adult's' psionic ability is limited to control of their own Il'Burugdi and communication between known 'adults' up to a distance of about 25,000 km.

Most 'adults' will generally have about eight Il'Burugdi, although they are capable of producing a new clone every 1.5 years after they reach maturity (at about 8 standard years). Few are capable of controlling more than about twenty.

Psychology[edit]

The Burugdi exhibit recognized characteristics of intelligence:

  • Conceptual thought, including abstract language.
  • Social structure, including social organization.
  • Tool use, allowing environmental manipulation.

Burugdi psychology is driven by factors common to many sophonts:

  • Acquisition (stemming from the need to gather adequate nutrition),
  • Preservation (derived from the need to continue their personal existence), and
  • Perpetuation (the urge to continue the species).

Archaeological Sophontology[edit]

Burugdi obtained their jump technology from the Zhodani in 742, which led to a massive technological advance, which has now stabilized at a comfortable TL–13. They control a militaristic empire in the Theta Borealis Sector, which has been at war with its human 'neighbours' for decades.

Cultural Sophontology[edit]

Burugdi are completely amoral and have successfully managed to corner several markets, including loan sharking. Most think of Burugdi as being crime lords, yet the vast majority are in fact legitimate business sentients, if extremely ruthless. The problem lies in the fact that to the Burugdi, a business opportunity is a business opportunity to be exploited, regardless of its legality.

Language[edit]

Natural pheromones produced by all parentals and Il’Burugdi reinforce the psionic communication process. This is the primary means by which Burugdi communicate with each other, but they also use complex spoken language when required. Burugdi speech resembles gurgles, burps, low grunts, and something akin to a turkey's "gobble".

Lexicon:

  • Buru: "Clan", derived from Bur, originally just one such grouping that became dominant, and so the model for others
  • Burugdi: From the "Expanded Bur", referring to a national-tribal identity that came to dominate their planet
  • Il'Burugdi: Sterile clones produced by asexual reproduction, smaller and more physically active than parent Burugdi (who result from sexual reproduction)
  • Rudeygi'Burugdi: "Burugdi Collective", the interstellar nation

Selected Proper Nouns:

  • Bd'rk'u
  • Br'drn'av
  • Bur'Kln'avr (a clan)
  • Bur'vr'di'klr
  • Dhi'vr'gdi (a clan)
  • Dn'bru'vkr
  • Gula'br
  • Hll'rd
  • Hrr'allru' (Hrr'allru'-class Patrol Corvette)
  • Rudeygi'Bur
  • Sengu'vr

Military[edit]

The Burugdi military consists of just a navy and an army, staffed by parentals in all "officer" positions and Il'Burugdi in the rest. The military hierarchy is monolithic, with promotion through the ranks a formal process of screening individuals from appropriate backgrounds. The rigid command structure is apparent in the strategies employed, which tend to be simplistic with little care for subtlety.

Interstellar Ambitions[edit]

The Burugdi aspire to their own interstellar state within Theta Borealis Sector.

Within the Imperium[edit]

The only Burugdi colony within the Imperium is in Dagudashaag Sector. A diplomatic mission was sent to meet with the Emperor in the 1050s to 'warn' the Imperium not to intervene in favour of human states in Theta Borealis (not that it intended to). After a frosty reception, the mission was in the process of returning when their ship misjumped. The ship re-emerged in Argi Subsector damaged beyond repair. Lacking the resources to transport the entire mission back to Burugdi space, a decision was made to send the ambassador back, and the rest of the 'diplomatic' mission would remain behind in human space and set up a colony. Outnumbered, the "Imperial" Burugdi have turned away from military conquest, and channel their aggression into business, both legal and illegal.
