History & Background (Historical Linguistics)[edit]
After decades and often centuries removed from regular society, Reavers developed a dizzying array of home-grown dialects.
Linguistic Composition[edit]
Nearly every band of Reavers (like many other specialized groups and societies) developed its own "cant" - a vocabulary and syntax to their native language intended to help a social group (especially one separated by status, usually lower, from the rest of society) communicate clearly (and obfuscate non-members).
- In a sense, there are as many types of "Reavers Cant" as there are bands of Reavers.
- In a generic sense, "Reavers cant" can exist in any language where Reavers developed their own socially-specific "language" - Aslan, K'kree, and every variation of Solomani language, among many others. The specific "Reavers Cant", however, refers to Reaver variations on Anglic. However, there is no unified, standard Reavers Cant - indeed, Reavers from one subsector, or even system, may be utterly unintelligible to those from neighboring territory.
Major Variations[edit]
In some systems -- those of the Khan World League and the Grand Duchy of Marlheim being the major examples -- Reavers Cant has developed into official or semi-official state languages.
- In the Grand Duchy of Marlheim, official "Marldaar" is a Reavers Cant heavily mixing the cantish Galanglic with the aboriginal Kdaar tongue -- which itself is a cant, mixing a base language called Platt with other influences.
- In the Khan World League, the cant of the dominant band became the Khanate's lingua franca - the standard for communications.
- As a rule, major variations in the cant are grouped by subsector; neighboring subsectors may have difficulty understanding and communicating; speakers from two subsectors removed may find a speaker unintelligible.
- Reavers will speak a dialect of Galanglic that, depending on their group's level and length of isolation, may be virtually unintelligible to mainstream Galanglic speakers.
