Ely-Osem System

The primary is Ely, a dim red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0055 Sols, a mass of 0.302 Sols, and a diameter of 443,500 km. (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a thin atmosphere radworld, (III) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (IV) Tarquin, a ringed small gas giant: (IVc) Osem is its outer satellite and is designated the mainworld, (V) a trace atmosphere iceworld, (VI) a vacuum iceworld, and (VII) a vacuum worldlet form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(IV) Tarquin

(IV) Tarquin is a small gas giant that orbits Ely at a mean distance of 0.95 AU, within the outer system, and has an orbital period of 1 year 250 days. It has a diameter of 37,000 km and is a pale green colour. It retains a family of three major satellites of which the outer, (IVc) Osem, is designated the mainworld.

(IVc) Osem

(IVc) Osem is the third of the four major moons of (IV) Tarquin and is designated the mainworld. It orbits Tarquin at a mean distance of 50 Diameters (1.85 million km), within the outer zone. It has an orbital period of 45 days 14 hours: it is tidally locked to Tarquin. The axial tilt is 5 degrees relative to Tarquin. Osem has a diameter of 8,309 km, a density of 5.42 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.52 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Tarquin cause frequent geological activity. Its atmosphere is rated as Trace, with a mean surface pressure of 0.023 bar and a composition of 93% carbon dioxide (CO₂), 5% nitrogen (N₂), 1% methane (CH₄), and 1% argon (Ar), azane (NH₃), hydrogen (H₂) and other trace gases. Approximately 27% of the surface is covered in sheets of water-ice and frozen gases. Mean surface temperature: –135°C.

Osem has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
