The Nisinapoint class Point Defense Fighter is a combatant smallcraft.
- It is a military ship and a Point Defense Fighter.
- It is most often encountered in service aboard Nisina class Escort Carriers.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The sled-shaped "Nisinapoint" fighters (built and named for the Nisina class) are made for speed first, fast enough to intercept any missile by combining the maneuver and reaction drives to achieve 16 Gs of thrust. Their shape also helps them slot into docking spaces aboard the carrier. They carry enough fuel to operate the reaction drives for half an hour, plus the rest of the craft for up 1.4 days in case the carrier is destroyed (though only enough life support for 1 day; the standard plan in this event is to land somewhere with air, and wait for rescue to jump in).
Being specialized in missile defense, the entire foremost portion of the craft (everything in front of the cockpit) is a turret hosting a single pulse laser for ease of targeting. Many squadrons make standard drill practice out of catching up to a missile volley, matching velocity vector, and shooting it as if mining an asteroid, though this scenario rarely happens in actual use.
Their weakness is barbettes: they are designed to hunt and destroy missiles, they carry enough armor to shrug off most beam and pulse lasers, and they are hard to hit with bay or spinal weapons, but they are easily destroyed by one good hit from a barbette-grade weapon. The solution is to hang back when facing foes so equipped, staying out of their range and frustrating their missile volleys while the fighters' allies (such as the carrier) send their own volleys in response. As one Nisina officer once famously put it, "Missile warfare is just so unfair when you're invulnerable and they're not."

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Nisinapoints have seen occasional independent use, being a fairly typical light Interceptor and thus of utility anywhere that incoming hostile missiles or smallcraft are expected.
- Please also see the article Nisina class Escort Carrier, for which Nisinapoints are named and were originally designed.
Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities[edit]
As with most smallcraft intended for ship service, Nisinapoints are rarely formally named, or if they are their naming scheme was created by their ship's crew, and the majority of comms traffic addressed to them uses the current pilot's name or handle.
