Madingik supports a population of fewer than 10,000 sophonts. Government control of this world is by an external military force. The world lies substantially outside of the habitable zone of the system and environmental temperatures are well below the freezing point of many gases.  This is a high technology world with available technology over the standards for Charted Space. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Remnants Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Madingik, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. This world has a nearby Imperial Naval Base, capable of handling warships. 30% of the world's population is the Minor Race Chirper. During the Long Night this world was named Diirkuur.

Astrography and planetology[edit]

Madingik is a member of the Dagudashaag Main. The naval base hosts elements of the 190th Fleet.

History and Background[edit]

The original colonists of Madingik were a transport of Droyne abandoned here when a Aakhri Empire ship suffered damage to its life support system during a battle with Medurma Pact forces. Rather than destroy them, the captain apparently hoped to return and pick up the survivors after the ship was repaired. It never returned.

The Droyne found that to survive it was necessary to burrow under the ice near some magma vents. Here they dwelt, living a primitive existence beside the great ice-covered seas.

In -27 humans arrived, establishing a colony on the equatorial continent. Neither party knew of each other existence until 175 when a tour guide was accidentally killed while visiting the Northern continent. The incident sparked off a long and bloody racial war, which lasted over ten years. In the end the sector navy intervened, negotiating a peace treaty that gave the Droyne the northern continent and the humans the equatorial one.

Madingik is a small, but thriving world. The Droyne still maintain a primitive TL–3 lifestyle. The humans' main industry is the manufacture of cold weather equipment and Vacc suits.

Several fossils of a creature believed to be the long-extinct sophont known as "Acathii" have been found on Madingik.

Urbanization[edit]

An island situated between on a warm ocean current between the two continents, known as Pax, was colonized. The island is open to both humans and Droyne. It serves as the planet's main port facilities, the Naval administration center, and from where the naval base commander governs the world.

A number of artificial islands are scattered around the island's coast, housing the wealthier members of society. These islands are surrounded by open water with the only access by drawbridge. By tradition the inhabitants are expected to put on a light show every night that the owner is in residence. These laser and hologram shows are visible for several kilometers.

The island itself is a warren of covered frozen canals. There are few restrictions against euphoric and recreational drugs. The many taverns sell alcohol and many less conventional drugs. The canals and streets are filled with revelers most days, and Pax is a favorite layover port for Naval personnel on shore leave. Many of the locals wear fanciful masks during their visits to the island, claiming the anonymity of the masks allows a fuller experiences.
