Liradi Trace

The Liradi Trace is a spur of stars bridging the rimward edge of Far Home Sector and the coreward edge of Gulf Sector.

Description / Specifications

The Liradi Trace is the furthest rimward part of the Distant Fringe proper and projects into the Great Void. The Trace is accessible by conventional jump-2 vessels. It is an isolated backwater dominated by exotic atmosphere worlds.

Nebula

• The Cauldron Nebula, lying within Cauldron Sector, some 107 parsecs to coreward-trailing, can be seen as a star-studded luminous region in night-time skies from all of the worlds of the Trace.

Bright Stars

• Basilisk's Eye (1723 Tarchon Sector). The extremely luminous white supergiant star, lying around 144 parsecs to coreward-trailing, can be clearly seen from all of the worlds of the Trace.
• Demon's Eye (1621 Far Home Sector). The intensely luminous blue supergiant star lying approximately 21 parsecs to spinward-coreward at its closest point, can be clearly seen from all of the worlds of the Trace even in daylight.

Demographics

Population: 4.71 million Sophonts.

• Humaniti (Human races)
  • Solomani (Major Race): 4.384 million (93.09% of the population), descended from human refugees who fled the Destruction of Terra. They refer to themselves as Terrans.

• Other Non-Human Races:
  • Hoppers: an estimated 300,400 "Distant" Hoppers (6.38% of the population), typically within established human communities. Most have never visited Fedan, their ancestral homeworld, and many have developed unique customs and habits.
  • Temelik: approximately 25,000 (0.53% of the population).

Native Sophonts

No native sophonts are known to have originated within the Liradi Trace.

Linguistic Topography

The following languages are the most commonly spoken within the Trace:

• Anglish The language of the Firstworlds. A direct descendant of Fleet Anglic, widely spoken throughout the Distant Fringe. Most people know a few words and phrases of Anglish.
• Padori. A direct descendant of Fleet Anglic, widely spoken within the Pador-Aredian cluster and common throughout rimward half of Far Home Sector.

Interstellar Relations

The worlds of the Trace are fiercely independent, largely as a result of the heavy-handed governance of Far Rim Mining.

Capitals

• Despite its extremely remote location Gevel, a pleasant garden world lying at the rimward tip of the Trace, is considered to be the capital. It is also serves as the capital of Gulf Sector.

History & Background

The Liradi Trace saw no activity by humans prior to the establishment of the Third Confederation, and what little development there was abruptly ended with the onset of the Dark Age, nearly two thousand years ago. Following the Renaissance period survivor worlds were recontacted and scavengers picked over the few remains that there were.

Far Rim Mining was founded as a subsidiary of the Rimward Opportunities Development Organization in 4950AD and given administrative authority over the Trace. It actively discouraged independent operations and settlement within the region. From the end of the 51st century to the middle of the 52nd century Far Rim conducted "Expulsions", the removal of individuals and organisations it deemed to be "illegal", from within its territory. The Expulsions were halted by the direct intervention of Rimward Opportunities.

The Tinacu Pell, a 10-000 dTon ore-hauler belonging to Far Rim Mining, was lost somewhere within the Trace in 5326AD. The ship was reputedly carrying thousands of tons of refined precious metals, rare earth metals and other extremely valuable resources. The loss of the vessel and its cargo was a crippling financial blow to Far Rim and hastened its collapse as an organisation. As far as is known the vessel has never been found and remains as a potent lure for adventurers and treasure-hunters.

In 5341AD the class A starport at Sal Marda was destroyed, almost certainly as a result of terrorist activity. With no internal ability to construct or maintain starships, and following close on the loss of the Tinacu Pell, Far Rim Mining folded as an entity. While the worlds of the Trace embraced their independence they suffered economic collapse. Trade slowed to a trickle, populations began to migrate towards the prosperous worlds to coreward, and infrastructure degraded along its length. The region remains a backwater dotted with abandoned mining sites and ruined facilities: only Gevel, a garden world lying at its tip, is developing and prospering.

Major Historical Events Timeline

Some of the more important historical events that have affected this area include:

• 2255AD: The Last Armada arrives in the Demon Cluster.
• 2500AD: The monolithic and anti-expansionist Second Confederation is founded. Settlement within the Demon Cluster is restricted to its coreward regions: The Liradi Trace remains unexplored and unpopulated.
• ca 3200AD: Very limited exploration within the rimward regions of the Demon Cluster: first exploration of the Trace.
• ca 3500AD: Sporadic settlement within the Trace.
• 3730AD: Voyagers arrive and devastate the Trace. The Dark Age begins. Most worlds become barren.
• 4549AD: The Voyagers depart and the Dark Age ends. The Renaissance sees the first steps back into space.
• ca 4900AD: Golden Age. Space travel becomes relatively commonplace.
• 4933AD: Formation of Rimward Opportunities Development Organization.
• ca 4950AD: The Liradi Trace is administered by Far Rim Mining, a part of the Rimward Opportunities Development Organization.
• ca 5080AD–ca 5130AD: Far Rim Mining conducts the Expulsions: they are halted by the direct intervention of Rimward Opportunities.
• 5184AD: Far Rim Mining becomes the premier element of the so-called "Hollow Opportunities".
• ca 5200AD: Development along the Trace.
• 5326AD: Loss of the Tinacu Pell somewhere within the Trace.
• 5341AD: Destruction of Sal Marda's class A orbital starport: it is the main supply port for the Trace and the fall in interstellar shipping causes economies to crash along its length.
• ca 5350AD: Rimward Opportunities ceases to exist as an entity.
• ca 5350AD–present: Economic collapse along the Trace and populations migrate to coreward. Facilities begin to degrade.
• 5600AD: Data for the Liradi Trace is published in the DSP Listing.
