Jump Flash
A Jump Flash is a release of excess energy released when an FTL starship equipped with a jump drive leaves or enters jumpspace.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
Ships exhibit energy, gravitic, and other signatures when entering or exiting jumpspace.
Entry Flash[edit]
A ship entering Jump Space emits an active flash of broad spectrum energy (...detectable by electronics and photonic sensors) roughly equal to the starship's size.
- The ship’s gravitational signature (...detectable by gravitics sensors) vanishes from any sensors. [1]
- Entry Flash is subject to lightspeed and lasts about a minute at peak strength. It then degrades over several minutes until it becomes undetectable. [2]
- Entry Jump Flash and Exit Jump Flash are more detectable on larger ships with larger jump drives. [3]
Exit Flash[edit]
A ship leaving Jump Space emits an active flash of broad spectrum energy (...detectable by Electronics and Photonic sensors) roughly equal to the starship's size.
- It is slightly less detectable than entry flash for unknown reasons.
- The gravitational signature (detectable by a gravitics sensor) appears on any suitable sensors.
- Exit Flash is subject to lightspeed and lasts about a minute at peak strength. It then degrades over several minutes until it becomes undetectable. [4]
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
It is believed that some forms of future FTL drives may not exhibit jump flash. The research portfolio on this is inconclusive based on reported observations of enigmatic precursor vessels.
Technological Overview of Projected Propulsion Technology[edit]
Expected Drive Development Sequence: NAFAL to FTL
- Relativistic Drive (NAFAL) → Jump Drive → Hop Drive → Skip Drive → Leap Drive → Bound Drive → Vault Drive → Six Drive → Seven Drive → Eight Drive → Nine Drive
