Iimkhir has both an unbreathably thin atmosphere and a lack of surface water making habitation by sophonts difficult. The system has a population between 10,000 and 10 million, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. This world is a satellite of a gas giant or another planet in the system. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Iiradu Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Iimkhir, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. During the Long Night this world was named Guukark Iin.

Astrography and planetology[edit]

Iimkhir is located on the Vilani Main.

Iimkhir's atmosphere is unusual that it appears to have accumulated after the planet was captured by the gas giant Ullike. It is proposed that Iimkhir was covered by ice but in the capture process the planet passed through or very close to the gas giant atmosphere, vaporizing the ice and creating a thin but surprisingly breathable atmosphere.

A small research base has been established to investigate this process since it offers possibilities for new methods of terraforming other planets.

History and background[edit]

The planet's primary industry is mining Iridium, a rare metal on most worlds, but found in abundance beneath the planet's dusty surface. However, a lack of management and investment means that the necessary refining equipment has never been brought in, and the metal is processed off-world.

Although there are some independent miners, most have formed co-operatives and corporations. Overall control of the planet is by consensus among these balkanized states, and it is the petty feuding between groups which has stalemated any attempts to improve the mining operations.

The starport is operated by Gushki Mining Corporation, which despite its name performs little actual mining, but acts as a unified front for off-world groups buying the Iridium. Most of the starport traffic consists of freighters hauling the Iridium ore off-world.
