  • Description (Specifications)[edit]

H-class Vessel's are not intended for offensive operations, they instead defend and secure fixed locations, almost always mainworlds and their associated star systems. These missions are considered paramilitary by the dominant thoughts of naval strategists within Charted Space. Patrol and Surveillance ships largely observe space, keeping track of things that are there and watching for things that aren't supposed to be.

    Strategy & Tactics (Doctrine)[edit]

H-class Vessels have two major taskings:

    1. Defensive Warfare
    2. System Security

They are generally considered secondary naval combatants even when they form the first line of defense against enemy fleets. Their inability to conduct primary naval offensive operations is the strategic reason why they are considered secondary naval combatants.

    Supraclass Archetypal Roles[edit]

These vessels typically serve the following archetypal roles:

H-class Defense / Security Vessel Supraclass Archetypes
    Archetype Type Code Exemplar Remarks
Security Vessel H (Namesake) Fazachu class System Defense Boat H-class security vessels cover a vast variety of vessels from paramilitary policing types, to bounty hunters, to dedicated military defensive types and more...
    • H = Defender / Security
Defender HD Kaga class System Monitor While most H-class vessels serve paramilitary functions, HD-Defenders are specifically military vessels with a dedicated defense mission. Most SDBs are considered paramilitary and are attached to planetary fleets, while most defenders are part of subsector or sector fleets and integrated into a larger strategic mission, often with better access to service facilities and jump shuttles for greater strategic mobility.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • D = Defender
Bounty Hunter Vessel HH Huntress class Bounty Hunter Hunter vessels are most often used by bounty hunters, hence their name. They can be characterized as high performance yachts specialized for combat duties in pursuit of high value targets.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • H = Hunter
Monitor HM Empress Troyhune class Planetoid Monitor Monitors typically represent non-FTL vessels used for system defense duties. They are often older warships repurposed to this duty rather than being mothballed or cut up for scrap. They can be monstrous combat platforms.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • M = Monitor
Police Ship HP Stenka class Security Vessel Police Ships police a star system. They are meant to uphold the laws of a controlling mainworld, typically a world-state. They patrol the inner and outer systems, but rarely the far system. They conduct patrols to discourage piracy, conduct customs inspections, and numerous other related tasks. Most tend to be boats, as in system craft with jump drives, but a few are equipped with jump drives to chase offenders out of the system. Many of these craft are seconded to subsector navies when need arises. These are considered paramilitary ships.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • P = Police, Gendarmerie, Constabulary, Mashkim, etc.
Q-Ship HQT Fenris class Q-ship A HQT-class Q-Ships are spaceships or starships designed to lure Corsair Vessels by giving the appearance of a weak, poorly-armed merchant ship, but having sufficient combat power to defeat them.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • Q = Q-ship
System Defense Boat HSB Dragon class System Defense Boat The first SDBs were of light to medium displacement, often retired hulls that were repurposed to form a plausible line of defense for star systems. They used a type code of SB or HSB.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • S = System Defense
System Defense Boat HSDB Zhodatl class System Defense Boat HSDB defenders possess medium to heavy displacement and came after the HSB series as SDBs were increasingly fulfilling the hopes of naval strategists and successfully defending star systems. Many are specialized for gas giant and planetoid belt ambushes.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • S = System Defense
Patrol Vessel HT Lurushaar Kilaalum class Corvette Patrol Ships (sometimes AKA Patrol Boats) are usually smaller vessels, lightly armed or unarmed, but generally with plenty of sensors, designed to maintain order in an area of space among people and ships who are inclined to be orderly in the first place. They tend to be used for space-traffic, safety and compliance patrols in areas without a lot of armed threats; a Patrol Boat may have enough firepower to deter minor threats, but isn't usually employed in places where even minor threats are likely.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • T = paTrol
Patrol Vessel HTP Shivva class Patrol Frigate Medium to heavy displacement.
    • H = Defender / Security
    • T = paTrol
Patrol Fighter FP Kirchner class Patrol Fighter Patrol Fighters are craft designed to operate for long duration over space or atmosphere in patrol roles, in particular combat air patrol (CAP), reconnaissance roles (Recon), anti-ship warfare (AShW), and search and rescue (SAR). A combat air patrol is a patrol provided over an objective area, over the force protected, over the critical area of a combat zone, or over an aero defense area (COACC), for the purpose of intercepting and destroying hostile craft and ships before they reach their target/s.
    • F = Fighter
    • P = Patrol
Privateer Vessel PRP Slade Mark I class Frontier Raider Privateers are a polity-sanctioned vessel that raids opposing polity vessels with a legal sanction.
    • P = Pirate
    • R = Raider, Commerce Raider, etc.
    • P = Privateer
Surveillance Scout / Intelligence Vessel SI Gishiash class Stealth Scout Surveillance Ships generally are focused on monitoring less-friendly areas - border regions, semi-denied and occasionally denied territory. Their primary "weapon" is a comprehensive sensor and computer fit; their primary defense is stealth and passive defense. Surveillance scouts often serve intelligence roles, picket roles, and observation roles, monitoring certain parts of space or certain groups and places of interest.
NOTES: There is semantic overlap between many of the classes and codes. Some codes organize by mission or capability, others by size and tonnage, and yet others by other characteristics.

    History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Military engineering is a constant tug of war conducted over millennia as competing technologies are continually developed, each changing the nature of warfare. The battle rider / carrier concept is only one of many relatively contemporary concepts that has been experimented with.

And the balance of defensive to offensive combat allocation is another. H-class vessels represent efforts to bolster the demands of security and defensive needs. These vessels and craft specialize in defending the smallest possible unit of value in an interstellar age, the star system. They include all manner of defenders from the smallest police smallcraft to the ubiquitous system defense boat to the mightiest of monitors. They often form the first and last line of defense as well as everything inbetween.
