Flare Ccass Gunboats serve with The Democratic People's Defense Forces, the armed forces of the Winston Democracy. Flare class Gunboats are carried by Stormbringer class Fleet Tenders to provide additional local sensor coverage and to extend the fleet's scouting range.

• They are fast and agile but have a light weapons load: the class are armed with missiles, a triple pulse laser turret and a pair of plasma cannons. The hull is very lightly armored.
• It ordinarily carries no subcraft nor drones.
• It has a 14 sophont crew and 3 marines.

The hull is fully streamlined, giving a good atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by its onboard gravitic systems. The vessel has two airlocks. The vessel has a sturdy retractable undercarriage, allowing surface landings.

Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems. There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel: individual sections of the hull can be sealed off. There are multiple emergency lockers.
3.	Performance	The vessel mounts a Jump-1 drive, a Maneuver-6 drive, and a Power Plant-9, giving performance of Jump-1 and 6-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 6. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for two consecutive Jump-1s and gives the power plant 4 weeks duration. The engineering section has a main control room. The jump drive utilises a lanthanum hull grid. The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4.	Electronics	Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/4 computer: no backup computer is installed. The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, an advanced sensor array, and an avionics suite. It is fitted with backup commo and sensor systems. It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command.

Flare class Gunboats are part of The Democratic People's Defense Forces, the military of the Winston Democracy.

Refined fuel is a serious concern to Flare class crews: the vessel is not fitted with onboard refining equipment and many local ports don't provide it. Crews are cautious about misjumps. The fusion power plant is huge and is over powered for the design's requirements, some discussion of a smaller power plant and switching to beam lasers has been considered recently.
