History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Cthonia is a high-population border world located in Orichalc Subsector of Alpha Crucis Sector. The system belongs to the Solomani Confederation and is a founding member of the Orichalc Regional Defense Association (ORDA).

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

This world has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

This world has a population of 10,000,000,000 sophonts (tens of billions).

World Government[edit]

This world is governed by a Charismatic Oligarchy, like a charismatic dictatorship in that a larger group has asserted their right to rule. The group will have better rules of succession and may last longer or may transition to a non-charismatic dictatorship.

World Economy[edit]

Cthonia is well know for manufacturing cybernetic augments.

World Military[edit]

Cthonia has a significant Home Forces naval component that is equipped with a higher proportion of jump-capable vessels than considered normal. These forces, as well the Home Forces of as other ORDA members, regularly exercise with the Solomani Confederation navy.

The ORDA members tend to organize their Home Forces along the Cthonian model, train at their military academy and use equipment designed by them.

Cthonia is the unofficial second home of the Solomani Confederation's Orichalc Border Fleet. The system's well-equipped Home Forces base is more than capable of supporting the fleet.

World Demographics[edit]

Cthonia was founded by a mutli-racial group of Terran settlers. The system is nearly entirely populated by people of Solomani descent.

World Culture[edit]

Cthonia is famed for its widespread usage of neuro-psychological techniques in many aspects of its society. It is used in the educational system to meticulously channel children into those fields they are most likely to excel in. People tend to be funneled into their eventual roles in a Cthonian corporation, government bureau or military force before adolescence. These techniques and other neural analyses are used in the court system.

World Law Level (L)[edit]

This world has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors). Civilian movement is rigidly controlled. Travel documents are frequently checked, and destinations must often be declared when traveling substantial distances across the world.

World Technology Level (TL)[edit]

This world possesses a Technology Level of TL–14 or TL-E in Hexadecimal Notation.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early meson communicators.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, early collectors, and advanced fusion plants.

Historical Data[edit]

Cthonia was one of the earliest Terran Confederation colonies. During the late Rule of Man Cthonia grew to prominence as a trading hub and industrial center and retained this influence even during the Long Night. In 33 the Protectorate of Cthonia was established as a successor to the League of Orichalc that collapsed four centuries earlier. Cthonia was the center of this important pocket empire during the Long Night, and its legacy played a major role in the eventual establishment of the Solomani Movement. The contemporary ORDA is in many ways the successor of the Protectorate and is even referred to as the 'New Cythonian Protectorate.'

  • The Protectorate of Cthonia was the last holdout of the pocket empires in the Alpha Crucis sector to be incorporated into the Imperium in 595.
  • Cthonia was an early adherent to the Solomani Movement, sending a large delegation to the first Movement meeting on Terra (Solomani Rim 1827) in 685.
  • In 1014 Cthonia founded ORDA, a mutual defense alliance consisting of 13 Confederation border worlds. Cthonia leads ORDA and has also used this position to gain economic and political advantages over its neighboring worlds. ORDA maintains a large, sophisticated fleet against the Imperial threat, independent of Confederation control. Although legally entitled to such a navy by the Charter, Confederation officials are concerned about the size of the ORDA armada. However, the potential expansion of Cthonian neuro-psychological techniques to other Solomani worlds has so far impelled the Confederation to leave Cthonia in peace.
