System Data[edit]

Gravin-Cren System[edit]

The primary is Gravin, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 4.67 Sols, a mass of 2.3 Sols, and a diameter of 4.591 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a trace atmosphere inner world, (III) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, and (IV) a sparse stony planetoid belt. (V) Belsad, a large gas giant, orbits within the habitable zone: (Vc) Cren is its outer satellite and is designated the mainworld. (VI) a ringed large gas giant, (VII) a small gas giant, and (VIII) a trace atmosphere iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(V) Belsad[edit]

(V) Belsad is a large gas giant that orbits Gravin at a mean distance of 1.74 AU (260 million km), within the habitable zone, and has an orbital period of 1 year 188 days. It has a diameter of 103,000 km and is a faintly banded grey-white colour. It retains a family of three major satellites of which the outer, (Vc) Cren, is designated the mainworld.

Mainworld Data[edit]

(Vc) Cren[edit]

(Vc) Cren is the outer of the three major moons of (V) Belsad and is designated the mainworld. It orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 25 diameters (2.57 million km), with an orbital period of 359 days 11 hours: it is tidally locked to Belsad. The axial tilt is 3 degrees relative to Belsad. Cren has a diameter of 8,122 km, a density of 4.23 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.49 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Belsad cause occasional geological activity. The atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.79 bar and a composition of 74% nitrogen (N2), 25% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the high percentage of atmospheric oxygen. Around 40% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 32°C. The climate is rated as Hot and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is active and strong weather systems driven by the star and the seas surge across the globe.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

Total surface area: 207 million km², Land surface area: 124 million km², Water surface area: 83 million km².

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Gravin-Cren System[edit]

Cren has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The dark side of the planet is dominated by frozen tundra, frozen lakes, and thick mats of chemosynthetic bioluminescent moss analogs. A few specially adapted predators prowl the twilight regions. Some of these interloping species use slimy secretions which quickly harden into viscous resins to trap prey.

On the bright side of the planet breathtaking large plateaus, with steep cliff faces, and deep valleys attracted early visitors. Many of the local species utilize fluid mosaic nucleic acids suspended in lipid bound membranes to control genetic inheritance. This leads to very high mutation rates. Massive impact craters mar a portion of the southern hemisphere. Hidden among them are extensive ruins of an ancient prehuman colonial effort. The reasons behind this lost colony's failure are unclear. Detailed archaeology has yet to be performed. Several universities have considered sending teams.

At lower elevations deep dark forests dominate the temperate latitudes. A form of transpiration drives their localized heavy precipitation cycles. These rich biomes are home to several species of spectacular arboreal ambush predators who prowl the canopy. Many of the local autotrophs are a sessile phase of these animals’ lifecycle. Other local autotrophic producer species float as gossamer thin strands of microscopic cells held aloft on strong air currents and persistent bladders of hydrogen. This air algae can be a respiratory threat as well as a navigational hazard for air breathing engines.

In an equatorial zone which the locals call Gurmez Thulic Beta, the crude starport is held under a protective trust to ensure pilgrims safe passage to the holy lands. Crusader fanatics guard the caravan approaches which lead into the vast ochre desert. They travel a long trade route by way of tightly guarded oases. Confessor priests astride local beasts of burden ensure the devoted are cleansed prior to their encounter with the great obelisks of faith on the holy mesa. Skeptic scientific investigators from off world have been forced to admit there is a powerful psionic field associated with these particular structures and pilgrims report fate altering visions and revelatory insights.

World starport[edit]

Cren has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level[edit]

Cren possesses a Technology Level of TL–3.

World government[edit]

Cren is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.
