The star Cor Caroli (otherwise known as Alpha Canum Venaticorum) is a binary star system composed of two components (ɑ1 and ɑ2 Canum Venaticorum) which was originally named in honor of one of the kings of the ancient Kingdom of England on pre-spaceflight Terra.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The two components of the Cor Caroli system are separated by approximately 675pc, and take about 8000 years to orbit one another.

  • ɑ1 Canum Venaticorum white main sequence star of spectral typr F0 - F2.
  • ɑ2 Canum Venaticorum is a blue-white (sometimes described as "pale lilac") main sequence spectral class A0 star with a peculiar spectrum. ɑ2 Canum Venaticorum is the prototype of a class of variable "magnetic" stars known as α² Canum Venaticorum variables.

The Cor Caroli star system lies approximately 35.2pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimspinward/Spinward direction from Terra at bearing 118.3o Galactic Longitude and +78.8o North Galactic Latitude.
