The Chacinti of Haradin (Mavuzog 0640) are a sophont species of Mavuzog Sector.

Physiology[edit]

The Chacinti are a sophont species native to tropical wetlands and coastal regions on their homeworld. Although they evolved in a watery environment and are naturally adept swimmers and divers, they are air breathers and will drown if they remain submerged for too long. The Chicanti are a sociable and gregarious species but naturally produce an overpowering odour, which tends to make social interactions with them difficult.

  • They are colloquially known as "squid-lizards" or "squiddies".
  • They may be referred to as a "centauropus".
  • A common derogatory name is "Stinkers".

Characteristic Odour[edit]

Chacinti have an extremely strong natural odour, which serves as an indicator of health and breeding status.

  • It has been described as being like "a pile of used diapers filled with rotting fish".
  • The smell causes an involuntary gagging reflex in humans.

Climate & Ecotope (Environment)[edit]

The Chacinti evolved on Haradin, a temperate garden world in Mavuzog Sector that shares many characteristics with Terra.

The species holds the following environmental preferences:

  • Terrestrial planet
  • Temperate-warm climate
  • Coastal, wetland, and swamp ecotopes
  • Standard gravity
  • Standard atmosphere

Anatomy & Physiology (Phenotype)[edit]

Sophontologists studying this species have determined the following data.

Body Plan (Morphology)[edit]

A typical Chacinti is slightly smaller and lighter than an average human.

  • An average Chacinti will stand at around 1.3 meters. Most can "draw themselves up" to around 1.8 meters.
  • A typical Chacinti will weigh around 60 kilograms.
  • The overall volume of a Chacinti is around 70 liters (0.07 cubic meters).
Chacinti Minor Race Hand.jpg

The body is formed from two distinct sections:

  • A humanoid upper torso with a distinct head and paired arms terminating in hand-like manipulators.
    • The head mounts the primary sensory organs: paired forward-facing eyes, small nostril pits on the upper jaw, and large moveable ear structures.
    • The head contains the brain inside of a chitinous skull.
    • The mouth consists of a hinged jaw and is lined with sharp teeth.
    • Their hands have three fingers and two opposing thumbs.
  • A bulbous lower torso dividing into seven muscular tentacles.
    • The central front tentacle and the rear left and rear right tentacle pairs are used for movement.
    • The longer front left and front right tentacles are far more prehensile and serve as manipulators
      • These two tentacles are sensitive to volatiles (each contains a primitive nose in its tip)

Chacinti are able to utilize human furniture, fixtures, and fittings with few difficulties.

Body Structure (Morphology)[edit]

Bilateral HBS-T-AA-LL-N Internal bony plates

Body Plan (Anatomy)[edit]

The Chicanti have an internal structure of interlocking plates, rather like a carapace and functioning as a skeleton, but covered by a thin outer epidermis with a wrinkly leathery appearance.

  • Their skeletal structure is formed from a chitinous material.
  • Their internal fluids are an oxygen-carrying watery ichor.
  • Their internal organs are contained within and protected by their skeletal structure.
  • Depending on their ethnicity, a Chicanti's skin is typically mottled shades of green, brown, or gray.
    • Greens and browns are the most common.
    • Greys are far rarer and indicate coastal (rather than swampland) ancestry.

Respiration[edit]

Chacinti employ a conventional respiration cycle consisting of:

  • Oxygen-nitrogen inhalant.
  • Carbon dioxide exhalant.
  • Although they are aquatic in nature, Chacinti are air-breathers.

Senses[edit]

  • Energy: V-18-RGB. Eyes located in the head (similar color perception to humans, slightly sharper eyesight)
  • Vibration: H-12-8382. Ears located on the sides of the head (less acute hearing than humans, more sensitivity to lower frequencies)
  • Volatiles: S-13-2. Noses located on the upper jaw and in the tips of the two manipulator tentacles (a slightly sharper sense of smell than humans)
  • Matter: T-06-2. The skin (a broadly equivalent sense of touch and pressure to humans)
  • Fields: A-04-1. A structure within the brain (a vague awareness of nearby electrical and magnetic fields)

Characteristics[edit]

A baseline member of the species has the following characteristic ranges:

  • Strength 2D
  • Dexterity 2D
  • Endurance 2D
  • Intelligence 2D
  • Training 2D
  • Social 2D

Genetic Profile: SDEITS

Aptitudes:[edit]

They are swift and agile climbers, and enjoy climbing cliffs, mountains, chasms, and even trees. They are very skilled molders, engravers, and sculptors. They also have a knack for stealth and recon, and enjoy a +1 bonus when attempting to do so.

Movement[edit]

When down on all limbs in a spider-like stance they are very stealthy and get a +1 bonus to stealth. They are excellent at swinging from rock to rock or branch to branch, making them quick climbers as well. However, they prefer to walk upright for better view, combat and communications.

Reproduction[edit]

Chacinti are asexual, and all of them can produce eggs. When generating an egg, they do not produce chitinth, stink defense or poison. Everything goes into making the new life, and they become ferocious eaters for two weeks. Once enough proteins and building blocks are consumed to make the egg, which contains a single young, it is swiftly expelled from the body. Chacinti lay eggs every 10 years.

After laying the egg they protect it until it is hatched, at which time they begin raising the child until its 14th birthday, by which time a Chacinti is usually fully physically mature.

Life Stages[edit]

  • 0 Infant: ½ Term (2 years). From aquatic larval stage to emergence onto land.
  • 1 Child: 1 Term (4 years). Rapid growth and adaption to a land environment. Improving balance and increasing hand-eye coordination.
  • 2 Adolescent: 2 Terms (8 years). Gradual increase in physical size, chitin density, and musculature.
    • Career starts at age 14.
  • 3 Young adult: 3 Terms (12 years). Peak physical condition.
  • 4 Adult: 5 Terms (20 years). Peak mental condition.
  • 5 Peak: 3 Terms (12 years). Prime of life.
    • Physical aging begins at age 58
  • 6 Midlife: 4 Terms (16 years). Muscle deterioration.
  • 7 Senior: 5 Terms (20 years). Health deteriorates.
  • 8 Elder: 3 Terms (12 years). Hand-eye coordination deteriorates.
  • 9 Retirement: 3 Terms (12 years).
    • Mental aging begins at 106 years. Memory and intellect deteriorates.

They tend to their young until the age of 14, at that point they begin to live on their own. When a Chacinti is producing its egg, all other Chacinti protect it until it regains its strength. They also protect children as a group if a child is threatened. Chacinti elders, when they get too old to function in society, are given a chamber in the family home and are tended too. In return the elder becomes, in essence, a chatinth-making factory, able to produce twice the normal amount per day as their children and grandchildren.

Typical lifespan is around 150 years.

Diet and Trophics[edit]

They are omnivore ambush-hunter/scavengers.

They have a two part, insect like mouth. The lower mandibles are for tearing off and holding food, with an upper part for grinding it up. Their tongue is a 5' long tentacle-like appendage with small hooks lined along one side. Chacinti have no vocal chords or swallowing muscles, so the tongue must reach up to grab the food and carry it to their stomachs. The tongue can be extended out of the mouth some 8" -- this is often a sign of anger, but it is also common that they clean all four hands with their tongues after eating. They have an organ that coverts all waste into chatinth and can excrete this into the stomach to be brought up with the tongue.

They farm fungi and algae as well as root vegetables and some fruit. They raise insect-like animals as well.

Chitin[edit]

They do not defecate or excrete anything other than chatinith. This comes out as a thick snot-like substance from their mouths, regurgitated from an organ that builds up 2kg a day of the substance. Once it hits oxygen outside the body it begins to rapidly dry and cure to take on the strength of steel; in the first few minutes it can be shaped and molded, clay like, into a desired shape. It can be shaped into simple tools or weapons, formed into armour and shields, or even used for construction or patchwork. It can serve as a makeshift weld or hull patch... but because it is only produced 2kg at a time, some things take a while to construct.

Their chatinth secretions can be used for climbing on slick or vertical surfaces for a short time, but must be cleaned off prior to the ten minute mark before it dries, in 18 to 20 minutes to become hard as steel.

Primal Drives[edit]

Species psychology is driven by factors common to many sophonts:

  • Acquisition (stemming from the need to gather adequate nutrition),
    • Curiosity (originating from the urge to seek out sources of nutrition)
  • Preservation (derived from the need to continue their personal existence), and
  • Perpetuation (the urge to continue the species).

They farm fungi and algae as well as root vegetables and some fruit. They raise alpinds which look like giant aphids and are raised like cattle for their meet and milked for their milk. They also eat wild worms that grow to 1 to 2 ft long -- and seem to be randomly everywhere on the planet's surface, or under it.

Behaviors[edit]

A number of other factors are significant in the mental processes of the species:

Curiosity is a major drive for them, they are mainly curious about alien species their cultures, behaviors, major drives, their biology, chemistry, and technologies and sciences. Virtue and honor are also important drives or behaviors for them. This stems from their belief that all life is connected at a spiritual level; it's also at the core of their being friendly and curious. While friendly and curious they are also, however, very cautious in all things.

Their outlook is cosmic sophontism. Their religion is more like a philosophy than a true religion; it's very similar to Buddhism. They believe in reincarnation and if you're benevolent in life you will return in a higher form or will live a more blessed life the next time 'round. Anyone can worship, and about 24% of the population does. Serving the temple means taking the path of a monk, starting at initiate and ending at master. Monks are taught martial arts and melee weapons, and if the initiate shows psionic potential they can be taught to utilise this as well; each school has one style of martial arts and one discipline of psionics (cross training is difficult and rare). There are five schools: telekinetic, telepathic, awareness, clairvoyance and teleportation. There is another discipline, secret and only taught to those with high rank within the temple: invisibility.

Chacinti have developed a freeze behavior; they can slow heart rate, respiration, and metabolism and hold still for months at a time, as well as voluntarily come out of it at will, being fully aware while in this state. They use this freeze for survival if found isolated from food and water sources, and can hold off starvation for up to 2 months or dehydration for 1 month. This has trained them to be extremely patient creatures, willing to outwait, if possible, any thing it benefits them to do so; for this reason disagreements with them can be very time consuming.

Major Drives[edit]

  • They tend to be solitary
  • They are friendly to most.

Cultural Notes[edit]

They use this in a martial art form they developed over the centuries it bestows them a +1 to their melee unarmed combat. this can be increased with training in melee natural or melee unarmed. their claws or ridge does 1d-2 per limbed used to attack. this is taught in religious monasteries for defense of self or other life. These monks serve as their religious leaders and the faith is practiced by 30% of the population. Unless taught by monks the only other source of teachers are the elite special forces.who learn it from the monks as part of their training.

Language[edit]

They don't posses vocal chords but can make noises; a series of clicks, screeches and grinding sounds made with their mouth pieces. They use a complex form of sign language, and can use their antenna to demonstrate particular moods or emotions. They use an almost undetectable (to Humans) pheromone scent-based communication as well.

They have a written language that is very similar to Chinese of ancient Terra, complex and detailed, and written top to bottom in paragraphs.

Social Organization:[edit]

They hate to wear clothing other than armor. Only the noble, royal families wear clothing, as well as leaders of respective areas of knowledge or religious leaders. Their religious leaders are monks from monasteries that specialize in melee armed and unarmed combat.Their special forces study this martial art for close combat techniques. A student of this art wears robes with colors and insignia of the family that started their monastery. Leaders of knowledge or skills wear sashes with their family logos and colours. Military who have achieved top rank wear a sort of surcoat with their war achievements, family symbol, and unit symbol.

Clothes are a symbol of great honor and given to those wielding great respect for talent in their respective fields; they are worn usually only when needed, and personal chitinth armour is commonly worn with them.

Government[edit]

Balkanization (distinct rival nations)

Military[edit]

Chacinti prefer to parley before a battle. They do not conduct war around populated areas or near valuable resources. They prefer to battle in wilderness, deserts, or the deep vacuum of space, where there will be minimal collateral damage.

They maintain a small standing fleet.

Interstellar Relations:[edit]

They are friends of the Talokan, viewing them as spiritual brothers (by the faithful), and as friends (by all other Chacinti). The two races share many planets and trade routes with each other, and work very well together.

Technology & Trade[edit]

The more advanced technology they have achieved have come from Talokan guidance from trade deals that were mutually beneficial; some of the maintenance performed on their fleet is done by the Talokan due to their superior tech level and degree of knowledge. They have a good understanding of robotics and robotic Intelligence, and employ droids often, for labor or other tasks. Among them are the deadly fighter and boarding military robots.

Technological Overview[edit]

Current Average Technology: TL-9 (Early Stellar)

Technological Research[edit]

Their chatinth is being used by the Talokan for quick patches for hulls, battle dress, and such. They have found a way to preserve the goo and make it dry quicker when needed, threw chemical alterations and delivered threw a new device they have invented.

Economics[edit]

  • Resources: A (Abundant)
  • Labor: 7 (Tens of millions)
  • Infrastructure: 5 (Limited, national boundaries)
  • Efficiency: 3 (Good)

Many forms of plant life on the Chacinti home world are harvested for seed periodically, and sold or traded to the Talokan. As well as a good portion of their fruits and vegetables, herbs and even some fungi, they trade or sell all excess chitinth substance, and any minerals, metals, or stones needed by the Talokan. This is done in ecologically responsible ways, due to their love of nature and connection to their worlds.

They export Chacinti sculptures, paintings, and other artworks. The Talokan elites love their unique designs.

They also manufacture melee weapons and custom steel armor with intricate design's and stylish designs. They receive mostly tech, knowledge, shipbuilding techniques, etc from the Talokan.
