The Beree of 947-319 (Glimmerdrift Reaches 1924) are a technologically developing Minor Race.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Beree central body resembles a thick barrel, 1.5-1.8m high and 70-90cm in diameter, which is supported on three powerful “legs”. The latter attach to the torso halfway up and are multi-jointed, allowing a Beree to move while upside-down, albeit uncomfortably. When locked, the three legs form a stable tripod.
A Beree’s “arms” sprout from the same central band of muscle around the center of the torso, and are set between the “legs”. Arms are also multijointed, but are much lighter then legs. They are long, sinuous and end in bony multijointed fingers that are ideal for fine manipulation. Beree limbs move in a way that causes instinctive revulsion in humans of mixed blood (but oddly, not in pure-blood Vilani). It is possible for humans to overcome this revulsion by repeated contact, but initial encounters with a Beree are always marred by this instinctive reaction.
Beree internal organs are well protected within the central body case, which has a tough, leathery outer skin and bands of muscle and cartilage to keep it upright. The brain is located in a bone armored case near the “top” of the barrel-body. There are three eyestalks set at 120° to one another and giving the Beree all-round vision. Sensitive areas at the base of these stalks “taste” the air to give a combined sense of taste/smell which is weak compared to that of humans. A digestive opening lies between these stalks, leading to a complex digestive system that can consume animal and vegetable matter.
Breathing holes are situated above and below the limbs, and are partially controlled by the same muscle groups that move the limbs. Thus a Beree will always be slightly in motion, swaying about and moving its sinuous “arms” as it respires. Beree move rather slowly, and with a jerky motion. They are very solid when stationary with their three legs based out, and are incredibly difficult to knock over. Their arms are surprisingly strong when used as tentacles to drag and lift, but their hands cannot grip anything like as tightly as those of a human. Beree can operate any device made for a human that requires only one hand.
Diet[edit]
Beree are super-omnivorous, i.e. they can eat almost anything organic and are extremely resistant to ingested toxins. Their normal feeding mode is random – they will grab and consume whatever comes within reach as guided by instinct. Some Beree learn to control their compulsive feeding, while others continually offend their non-Beree acquaintances by feeding on houseplants, insects and the occasional domestic pet.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Their homeworld has no spaceflight capability, but occasionally a Beree will leave home aboard a free trader, working passage in return for the chance to see the wider universe.
Cultural Psychology[edit]
Beree are pragmatic and straightforward, relying more upon instinct and learned patterns than creativity. They can be relied upon to react predictably to most situations.
